Having Kesar (Saffron) During Pregnancy

Having a pinch of Kesar or saffron with milk is beneficial for solving digestive problems during pregnancy. Let us have a look at how and when you should have Kesar during pregnancy.

Kesar or saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world that has immense therapeutic properties. It has high nutritional content due to the presence of Thiamine and Riboflavin. This medicinal herb is believed to be very beneficial for pregnant women. There are various myths and beliefs across segments of the races that are related to the immense beneficial properties of this medicinal herb. Most believe that taking saffron with milk when you are pregnant, will result in the birth of a very glowing and fair baby. This is not true, as the complexion of the baby is no way related to the intake of saffron; however, there are several other benefits of taking in saffron when you are pregnant.

Always a Pinch an No More

Kesar has to be taken in very small amounts; otherwise it can be harmful for pregnant women. There have studies that have reported that high doses of saffron have led to untimely contractions and even miscarriage.

When You Can Take Kesar?

This can be by first pointing out the utility of having Kesar in the first place. Smooth digestion is always an issue during pregnancy. So a stimulating agent like Kesar can be beneficial for women when they are pregnant. According to the Ayurveda, taking in very small amounts of saffron aid in initiating the movement, or the activity of the foetus, inside the womb. Since the movement is noted generally in the fifth month of the pregnancy, it is advisable to take kesar post the fifth month of pregnancy.

How to Have Kesar in Food?

The manner in which it is consumed is also important. Since Kesar is responsible for increasing the body heat, it should be taken in as a component in sweets or milk, etc. it should always be remembered that the amount should be always very minute. A high quantity can be fatal as mentioned above. Kesar or saffron is famous for its exclusive aroma and flavour, so it is also named as the Golden Spice. Many Indian dishes add saffron as an ingredient to enhance the flavour of the dish or for the unique colour and aroma. It can be added to milk, to various sweets, to rice based dishes and even in soups.

Sometimes women face problem in digesting milk or any other milk products when they are pregnant. If you happen to be one of them, it is advisable to drop a few strands like four to five strands of saffron in a glass of water and have it. It will help your digestive system, since the digestion is usually slow in expecting women. It is always recommended that you take the advice of your healthcare provider before you decide to take in any supplement, whether it is a medicine or a herb when you are pregnant. To ensure the safety of your health and that of the unborn baby should be of prime concern.

Remember that it is a pure myth that natural products or herbs are devoid of any harmful attributes or do not render any side effects. There have been studies to prove that an apparently exotic and flavour inducing herb like Kesar can be extremely harmful if taken in large quantities when pregnant. It can lead to birth defect or miscarriage or both. So exercise caution when you take it and come out of the age-old myth that saffron will help you give birth to a glowing baby.

Kesar during pregnancy must be taken with caution as it is a potent herb. if you take too much then you can have complications. Rather than going in for fair skin, kesar should be taken for its health benefits.

This is a misconception or myth. saffron does not lead to fair skinned babies but the skin colour is hereditary. I never had saffron milk but still my kids are fair.
