Newborn's Development in the Sixth Week

Read on to learn more about the developments that you may experience in a six week old baby. Also find some tips on the things that you can do for aiding the development of your baby at this stage.

These first few months of a baby’s life are the most important months for their proper growth and formation of a healthy body. So, it is of utmost importance that you as a mother keep a keen eye on everything that the baby wants, does or tries to indicate. They are very confused and are not matured enough to understand what is going around, what is good for them and what is not. So, you need to monitor everything for them to stay fit and healthy. Here is some information about what you can expect as your baby steps into his or her sixth week on this earth.

Crying Increases during this Period

With the onset of the sixth week, your baby may start crying frequently. If you had thought that the crying had reduced a lit bit for a few days, then be prepared because it may start again. Even though colic is a common reason for babies to cry at all odd hours, there might be other reasons too. Sometimes it may be due to discomfort and at other times it may simply be that they want to be held and comforted. So do not lose patience. Take breaks to clear your head when they cry continuously and try to soothe them with renewed energy.

Your Baby Will Take Short Naps

Your baby will take short naps at this stage. Make sure that you do not disturb her. Let her take such naps according to her own comfort level. If you wake her up she may bring down the house with her cries. Adjusting according to the own comfort level will help your baby develop a proper routine so that she knows when she should sleep and when she should stay awake. This also helps in maintaining a proper feeding pattern.

The Amount of Breastfeeds Increase

Your baby will not want the feed more frequently. But when you feed her, she will have the feed until she is completely full. During the sixth week the amount of breastmilk that babies consume increases and therefore the number of time you breastfeed your baby decreases. This is because they have a growth spurt. Proper sleep and food is a must during this period of growth spurt.

Need to Introduce the Bottle to Your Baby

Ideally doctors advise mothers to avoid using feeding bottles. If at all using feeding bottles cannot be avoided, it is the perfect time for you to introduce the bottle. You might be planning to go back to work in a few weeks and if your baby has not yet been introduced to the bottle then it might become a problem for you. The kids have to become accustomed to feeding from a bottle during certain feeds so that it does not become mandatory for you to be present there. If you have the bottle to rely on, someone else who is looking after the baby can also feed her properly when you are not around. Intersperse breastfeeding and bottle feeding to make things easier for your baby. You can even express and feed your breastmilk to your baby with bottle after consulting your doctor and learning about the ways to feed it.

If you have to get up frequently at night for changing your baby’s nappies, you can start using diapers by this time. Purchase the diapers which are specially designed for newborns. Using diapers can help your baby to sleep through the night comfortably. It will also give you a good night’s sleep. Get right kind of toys that can aid your baby’s growth and development.
