Tips For Infant Car Safety

By taking right infant car safety measures parents can ensure enjoyable travelling experience for themselves and for the baby.Read on to know more about car seat safety and common car seat mistakes which parents commit.

Travelling with an infant can be an enjoyable experience for both the parents and the newborn if it is planned well in advance. No doubt there will be certain challenges initially which are easy to overcome if the parents are prepared and know what to expect. Here in this article you will find information regarding some of the basic tips for infant car safety. Also check out the 5 common mistakes which parents make when it comes to infant car seats.

Car seat safety is essential for protecting an infant while commuting by car. Parents must be aware of the procedure to safely install a car seat and buckle up the baby. In addition to installing the car seat and securing the infant with the help of a seat belt parents must always ride the infant on the back seat of the car only. Placing the baby in the front seat or holding her in an adult’s lap is absolutely unsafe.

How to Ensure Infant Car Safety

A few other things to bear in mind to ensure infant car safety include:

  • Do not take out your baby from the car seat while the car is in motion.
  • For feeding the infant or changing her diaper, stop the car.
  • To ensure that an infant is comfortable it would be worthwhile to stop for a few minutes every hour or every half an hour.
  • Buy a car seat which will suit your infant’s age, weight and height.
  • Be aware of safety rules outlined in the car and the child seat manual
  • After installing the car seat try to move it. If properly installed, it will not move more than an inch side to side along the belt path. In case it does move the seat must be reinstalled or its straps must be tightened.
  • Never leave an infant unattended in a car.
  • Activate the childproof locks to ensure that the infant cannot move out of the car.
  • Loose items kept in a car can fly about in a crash. Hence, keep such items in the glove box or in the boot.

Common Car Seat Mistakes

To ensure infant car safety understand the following common car seat mistakes that parents often make:

Buying a Car Seat Without Checking it Out -

Parents must take into consideration the following aspects while choosing a car seat for the infant:
  • The seat should come with instructions and a label displaying the manufacturing date and model number. The seat must be suitable for the age, height and weight of the infant.
  • It should not be more than six years old
  • The car seat should not appear to be faulty in appearance. There should not be any cracks or missing parts which are a clear indication of a bad product.

Placement of The Car Seat -

The ideal place for a child car seat is the back seat of the car away from active air bags. Vehicles without a back seat are unsafe for travelling with small children.

Using a Car Seat As a Crib -

A car seat helps to ensure that a child is safe while travelling. Do not make use of it as a replacement crib in your home. Restrict the use of car seats for car travel only.

Improperly Buckling up The Child -

Parents must read the car seat manual carefully to understand the correct way to buckle up the baby. Securing the child in a car seat must be done correctly and never in a hurry.

Attempting to Keep a Child Upright -

Most car seats come with angle indicators or adjusters. Unless the car seat is reclined as per the manufacturer’s instructions the infant’s head may flop forward while travelling

If you avoid the above mentioned mistakes and follow right infant car safety tips, both you and your baby can have a safe and comfortable journey. Follow the above tips to have a happy journey with your baby by car.

Make sure the buckled harness straps that keep your baby properly positioned and secured in the car seat fit snuggly. Loose harness straps don’t provide maximum protection. Be sure the harness is tight, so you cannot pinch extra webbing at the shoulder.

Keep babies rear-facing in a convertible seat until they reach age 2 and the maximum height or weight allowed by the manufacturer.
