How to Travel with a Baby

Are you travelling with your baby for the first time? Your baby is ready to explore the outside world with you once he or she is seven to eight months old. Read on to find health and safety tips for travelling with a baby.

It is a great experience to take out your baby on a holiday. Although, for most part it is fun it can be a little challenging too. The purpose of this article is to provide you some basic information on how to prepare for a safer and happier family holiday.

By the time a baby is around seven to eight months old, she is old enough to recognise her surroundings. In fact she can easily make out her home. Travelling to new destinations can disrupt a baby’s sense of routine and security. This is particularly true when you visit unfamiliar places or get to meet a whole lot of strangers.

Children are bound to get upset and cranky when they do not get to sleep, eat or play in the familiar surroundings that they may be used to. To make travel and holiday stress free for you and your baby you can do the following things.

Health and Safety While Travelling

Have a quick look at the health and safety tips for travelling with a baby.

Travelling With a Baby by Car - Ensure to make use of window shades while travelling by car to shield the baby’s skin and eyes from harsh rays of the sun. Install the baby’s car seat properly and fasten the seatbelts correctly. It is ideal for babies to travel in a rear-facing car seat installed on the back seat of the car. Do not install baby’s car seat on the front seat or do not sit with your baby on front seat. You can halt in between if the baby is feeling cranky due to long distance travel.

Travelling With a Baby by Plane - Inform the booking authorities that you would be travelling with a child so as to opt for all the extras you can. Call at least 24 hours before departure time to ensure your booking and travel time.

It can be quite cumbersome to take your entire hand luggage to washroom every time your baby needs to use the toilet. Hence, it may be worthwhile to make individual packs of nappies including diapers, nappies and wipes or cotton balls.

Dress your baby in comfortable outfits and in multiple layers if necessary. Remove the extra layers if she feels hot or if there is a spill. Choose a flight that will suit your baby’s sleep pattern and will cause least amount of disruption to her normal routine.

Feeding Baby while Travelling

In case if your baby is not being breastfed, carry enough formula and filtered water to prepare your baby’s milk. In fact easy to use travel packs of formula milk are available in most health food stores these days. In addition to formula carry some fruits, biscuits, dry snacks and packets of such other food which you can use in case of an emergency. Ensure to pack spoons, bowls and bibs too as part of your travel gear.

Keeping Baby Occupied while Travelling

To keep your baby happy and entertained during the entire holiday, make sure to pack her favourite toys and some new ones also. Musical toys, building blocks, picture books and such other toys capable of capturing the attention of your baby are the best for travel.

Travelling with a baby is never nightmarish or challenging as considered by many new parents. All that is required to make the experience enjoyable one for all concerned is a little bit of forward planning.

We've recently been on a 7 day holiday with our 8 month old. I took many things but tried not to take much! There were many things which we didn't use but took along thus adding to the luggage
