Signs That You Are a Mean Dad

Signs That You Are a Mean Dad

In the upbringing of children, role of dads is as important as the role of moms. Children expect unconditional love and care from dads too. Therefore, dads too should avoid being rude and mean to their kids. Do you think that you are being mean to your kids? Read on and find out.

Being a parent might be one of the best things you can ever be in your life but everything comes with a catch no matter how good it seem to be. It is not a child’s play to handle a child. It is duty of parents to help them grow up to be a responsible citizen and most importantly a good human being.
As the dad, you have a lot of responsibilities. In most cases; the father usually becomes the role model for the kids. Even though it might be a very proud feeling, being one is fairly difficult. It is easy to get frustrated with all the stress and you might find yourself losing your cool often. However, anger is not the solution to your problems whatever they might be. It is important to teach your kids what is right and what is wrong, be strict when strictness is necessary, but being mean is definitely not something you should be. It can not only harm your child mentally, but also make them fear you, hence making them timid natured and introverted.
They will constantly be under the fear of upsetting you, being around you and eventually when they grow up, they will have nothing for you but bitterness. There are many reasons why you become a bit rough around the edges and stress is one of them. Here is a list of signs indicating that you are being a mean dad:-

Habit of Hitting Kids

No matter what the situation might be, hitting your child is one of the worst things that your child should have to go through. If you are in the habit of hitting your child as a punishment, you should know that it is what instils fear in a child’s heart. Punishing your child for something bad he or she did is something that is necessary if your child happens to be stubborn, but hurting them physically is what takes the cake.

Not Willing to Give Time to Kids

You may be too busy in your life and work to give time to your family members but no matter how late you get or how busy you are, you should spend time with your kids. In fact it should be therapeutic after one whole day’s hectic schedule. However, if you are not willing to do so yourself and would rather be doing something else, nothing spells meanness more than that.

Inappropriate Behaviour

Kids learn from their parents and their home environment. This is a universal statement. Parents should always behave appropriately in front of children. Inappropriate behaviour towards them and also in front of them towards others is what sets examples for them and they in turn end up behaving inappropriately as well.

Insulting Them

Children make mistakes. They make mischief as well. They should be taught what is right from wrong. But insulting them constantly for their actions, berating them, tearing them down is the worst sign of being mean to your kids.

Interfering a Lot

One of the major signs of being mean in the annoying sense is interfering in your child’s life a bit too much. Give them the space they need. Parental involvement is necessary for child’s development but parents should know where to draw line between being involved and being overprotective.

Not Trusting Kids

Kids are vulnerable to various things you would want them to be engaged in. Teach them what is right and what is wrong and then trust them to be on their own so that in your absence, they can get by well and develop a sense of autonomy. However, if you happen to be overprotective and you do not trust your child, you are simply being a mean dad.
There are many instances in where you tend to be mean involuntarily without you even realizing it. But no matter what the issue may be, hurting kids is something no sane parent would want. Children should be given utmost love, care and support and only then will they have a healthy childhood.

What is the role of dads in the upbringing of children? How can dads be involved in the upbringing of children? Why should dads avoid being rude and mean with children? Discuss here.
