Signs that You Are a Mean Mom

Being mean to children can hamper their emotional well being. Are you being mean to your children? If you have not yet realised that you are being mean to children, it is the time to find out now. Learn about the common signs and characteristics of a mean mom.

The mother is the first face that a child sees when he or she is born. She is the child’s world and nest of peace and love. As a mother, your responsibility towards your child is the most important. A child looks up to his or her mother as a source of comfort, respite and shelter. If you happen to be a single parent, taking care of your child and handling expenses as well can be hectic and frustrating.

In the ocean of responsibilities, it is easy to miss your motherly boat of calmness. Frustration can be like a disease and when it takes over your mind and body, you lose your temper and end up being mean to your little bundle of joy. It is not just single parenthood that brings you frustration. Even if you are not one, you will be prone to frustration.

Children are more vulnerable to meanness than adults and especially if it comes from one of their parents. A parent’s neglect and mean attitude towards them is what affects them the most and hence they end up in the depths of depression.

Depression during childhood is something that your child should not have to go through. You as a parent should know that the most and try your level best not to push your child towards that corner no matter what the circumstance may be. Here is a list of ways to let you know if you are being a mean mom to your child.

Common Characteristics of a Mean Mom

As a mother, taking care of your child’s basic needs is your topmost priority. However, a healthy mind makes a healthy body. To ensure that your child is being brought up properly, you need to be there for him or her emotionally not only in happiness but also when he or she is mentally perturbed. If you keep ignoring your child’s negative feelings it is a definite sign of meanness.

No mom wants to be labeled as a ‘mean mom’ but it happens unknowingly. Here are some of the signs exhibited by mean moms.

Blaming the Child too Much

It may be true that you had to give up your lifelong dreams and make a lot of sacrifices to take care of your child, but blaming them too much because of this is nothing but being mean and unfair to them. What is in the past is in the past. It does not do well to dwell in it and as a result you forget what you have in the present.

Not Giving the Child His or Her Personal Space

You need to let go of your child sometimes to find themselves on their own. Let them make their own decisions. If you find it hard and punish them for deciding things without your permission it is a clear sign of meanness and can lead to toxicity in the relationship between you and your child.

Giving Yourself Too Much Importance

It is true that you play one of the most important parts in your child’s life. But always wanting to be in the limelight, giving yourself all the credit in front of people and making sure your child knows it is one of the worst signs of meanness that you can subject your child to. This can end up making your child feeling insecure and have a low opinion about him or her.

Being Cruel

It is one thing to be strict with your kids, but it takes a whole new level when it becomes cruel. Calling your kid names, insulting them, always berating them and demeaning them is one of the worst signs of meanness in a parent. It is this kind of behaviour that completely shatters a child.

It is the behaviour of the parent is what makes and breaks a child. Behaving responsibly, giving your kids love and care, teaching them the difference between right and wrong without instilling fear into their hearts, showing interest in their interests and encouraging them, having fun with them, giving them time, teaching them values is what makes you a great parent and in turn what makes your child great as well.
