10 Things Parents Should Never Say to Their Kids

10 Things Parents Should Never Say to Their Kids
Parents often make mistakes unintentionally because they have to deal with a lot of things daily. Parents must note that certain things said to kids can convey wrong message or give a wrong idea to them. Saying such things can also affect their self-esteem and hurt them. Read on to learn about the top 10 things that you should never say to your kids.

Just as parents have expectations from kids, kids also look out for many things in their parents. Parents do make mistakes and learn from even their children so that to make their relationship successful.
Communication is the key in every relationship and good communication is what kids long for. This is the reason why you should avoid saying wrong things to your kids or such things that might convey wrong message to them. Here are the most important things that you should not say to your kids, no matter what.

Top 10 Things Parents Should Avoid Saying to Their Kids

The way you talk to your kid can affect their self-esteem. Here are the top 10 things which you should never say to your kids.

  1. “You never do anything right”

What you say means a lot to your child and words spoken cannot be reversed. Kids take everything said by their parents to heart. So, instead of pointing out the wrongs, focus on the things they do rightly.
  2. “That is silly, you cannot be disturbed over that”

There are times when children get hurt on silly things. But always remember that they are still kids and most of the kids are sensitive. So, consider your child’s thoughts and feelings over the issue and support them emotionally when they are upset.
  3. “Your sibling is my best child”

This is the worst and most common mistakes almost every parent does. This makes the child feel that no matter what he does, he is not going to impress his parents. So, whether you are comparing your child to family members, friends or siblings, stop immediately.
  4. “You are useless”

This statement will make your child extremely disappointed. No matter what happens you should never use the words useless or hopeless for your children.
  5. “I don’t have time for you”

You might be extremely busy and do not have time. You can tell your child in another, polite way rather than saying this. Every child needs attention of their parents.
  6. “I hate your father/mother”

No matter how disturbed you are or your relationship with your spouse is, never tell any bad thing about him or her in front of your child.
  7. “You are not as beautiful as your sister”

This will stimulate hatred even if you are telling this in mere frustration.
  8. “I know I’m right”

This statement shows that since you are a parent you have made up your mind and no clarification from your child’s side would convince you. Always give your child a chance to explain.
  9. “I Wish I never had kids”

As a parent you might say these without meaning them, but your child may feel unloved. These are extremely harsh words and you should never say these.
  10. “I am disappointed by you”

It is possible you did not expect a bad result from your son, but instead you can say that you are surprised and did not expect this from him.

No matter what you say to your child, you should think and choose proper words for communication. It is very important to think before you speak to your children. Always keep in mind that they are still young and have their own set of curiosity and activeness. Just keep in mind that the way you interact with your child in everyday life will have a negative or positive impact on their lives.

What is the right way to talk to kids? Which things should parents never say to their kids? How should parents behave in front of kids? Discuss here.

Surely, parents should take care of what they are doing and what they are speaking in front of kids. It was good.

What to do now? Children are grown up now and we had already used these words/phrases. Is there any rectification or remedial measure?

How can one deal with the situation when parents (particularly those who say that they are never wrong) say exactly what they should not?

I agree with Kiran...it is not correct to say things to kids to take out your frustration. Kids can take such things seriously. It is not good to insult kids.

A lot of times parents say bad things to children out of frustration or if they are angry on someone else. It is not correct to make children target of anger. They can suffer for their rest of the life.
