Week 38: Baby Starts Breathing

Week 38: Baby Starts Breathing

Reaching the 38th week of your pregnancy might give you mixed feelings as you are nearing your delivery date. Here’s what you should be expecting in this month to ease your worries.

You might notice your baby has more hiccups this week. This is because he or she may be trying to use his or her lungs as he or she practices breathing. But because there is no air around him or her, the amniotic fluid gets into his or her windpipe and causes hiccups.
Most of the 'lanugo' or the fine downy hair that was covering his or her body will have gradually disappeared. There should only be some left on his or her shoulders, arms and legs and other bodily creases.
Even though your baby is increasing at the rate of 28g. per day, you won't put on much more weight at this stage.
Your wait seems to come to an end with only 2 more weeks for your delivery. So, the trick now is to sit back and relax these next few days. With progress of your pregnancy, it is natural to feel some bodily changes. By this time you may have experienced swelling in your face, ankles and feet. Your baby too is going through a phase of rapid change and development at this time. He or she too is preparing for the labour.
Here we shall discuss some of his or her developments you can expect at the 38th week of your pregnancy. Take a look:

Growth of Your Baby

Growth of your baby has slowed down at this week, but she has not stopped making strides though. Your baby is now around 20 inches in length and weighs around 7 pounds. With continuation of his or her growth, most of the organs have matured and are fully functional. The lungs and brain of course needs some more time to develop. They shall in fact be fully functional, once he or she is born.

How Does He or She Look Like?

You may be eagerly waiting to see if he or she shall look like you or his or her father. What would be his or her hair colour? And what about his or her eyes? Will they be brown or black?
Well, if you are thinking of all the possible colours his or her eyes can be, you need to wait till she is 9 months to know what her actual eye colour is. Coming to her hair, do not be disappointed if you find no hair at all during her birth. Most babies grow their hair after birth. May be you too have to wait a little longer.

Baby’s Body Hair

Your baby is now shedding lanugo, which is the coating of fine hair that has been protecting him or her all this while. You may find some of them still there on his or her shoulders, back and neck when he or she is born. He or she has lost most of the vernix, a creamy like texture that has protected his or her skin from the amniotic fluid he or she has been swimming in.

Waste Disposal

Some of the lanugo and vernix are left in your baby's intestine and it constitutes part of the meconium. It is a blackish green substance that shall form the first bowel movement of your little one. This consists of amniotic fluid, dead cells and waste materials from the gallbladder, liver and pancreas. He or she is now filtering out some of the waste from his or her kidneys. However, they shall start functioning only once he or she is born.
Your baby is considered full term now. However, you need to wait for 2 more weeks for the official date. Around 85% of the babies are born within in a span of 2 weeks from the official due date. So, get ready, you may soon give birth any time in the next 2 weeks! Well, this certainly does not mean you will stop doing your daily chores and keep waiting for him or her to arrive. Let him or her decide when it is the best time to show up!
Make sure to go for the regular checkups and see his or her developments in the ultrasound sessions. If your doctor thinks your baby is in the breech position, he or she may ask to get a sonogram done for confirmation. Take a last look at your baby through the computer screens, before he or she actually comes out in the world. It is certainly one of the moments you have been waiting in anticipation.

What changes takes place in the 38th week of pregnancy? What happens if baby is in breech position? How should expecting mothers prepare for the delivery? Discuss here.
