Using Cosmetics during Pregnancy

Using Cosmetics during Pregnancy

Using some cosmetics during pregnancy for looking good may not be safe for the mother and the baby. Find out which cosmetics should be avoided when you are pregnant.

There is nothing wrong in wanting to look good always. But when you are pregnant, you need to be cautious that you are not indulging in anything that can remotely affect the well being of your own health or that of your baby in a negative manner.

It has been found through a number of studies that certain elements present in some cosmetics are harmful for the mother and the yet to be born baby. You need to take precautions that you are not using them and be aware on the ingredients of the products that you are currently using are not hazardous in any manner. After all, you would always your baby to be born with good health.

Here are some pointers to look out for:

Avoid Hair Dyes and Sprays

Hair sprays and hair dyes are potentially found to be harmful for the baby, and so are the hair curling and straightening chemicals. Although there has been no evidence found on what exactly is the harmful ingredient in these cosmetic products. But it has been found that there is a direct relation between the frequency of using these products and the rate of miscarriage. Therefore, it is generally recommended to stay away from these hair products at least during the first trimester of the pregnancy, when the foetus is in its early stage of development. If you need to use a hair dye, it is always advisable to at least keep it away from the scalp, and thus avoid its direct contact with the skin.

Avoid Cosmetics Having Phthalates

Phthalates have been found to be very harmful and exposure to it during pregnancy hinders the development of the foetus genitals, if he happens to be a boy. It is called the AGI or anogenital index which refers to the sensitive index of demasculisation of the reproductive tract of the male. Exposure to phthalates results in the baby boy being born with lesser AGI scores and also has an incomplete descent of their testicles.

Toxins Are to Be Shunned

There are many cosmetic products that have chemical toxins that are harmful for the well being of the mother and baby. They can be present in deodorants, perfumes, lipsticks and nail paints. The toxins include reproductive toxins, endocrine disrupters and carcinogens.

Petroleum By-Products

There are many variants of petroleum by-products like coal tar, petrolatum, 4-dioxane and so on that are commonly found in lipsticks, lip glosses and certain eye shadows.

Kohl or Eyeliners

Many cosmetic eye liners are found to contain lead, aluminium, antimony and such other harmful chemicals. You need to stay away from them as they lead to potential neurological harm to the baby.

Finally, it is important that you are well aware of what you are using on your skin when you are pregnant. You need to take an objective point of view to the belief that makeup and toiletries are intended to make you appear good and do no harm. While it is important to take good care of your skin and follow a regular cleansing and moisturising routine, you must ensure that each product you are using is safe and free from any questionable ingredient. After all, what you apply gets absorbed and thus penetrates into your blood stream. So take good care and stay safe.

I am three months pregnant and this article has really made me tensed. I have been using hair sprays and gels and I never knew that they could be harmful. Nobody had told me about not using such products and now I am worried if it has caused any defects in my baby or not. How can I allay my fears?
