How to Avoid Unplanned Pregnancies

An unplanned pregnancy is a cause of severe mental distress for couples. Avoiding unplanned pregnancy is the best option. There are various ways of avoiding this. Read on to know ways for avoiding unplanned pregnancy.

Abstinence and contraception are two ways to avoid unplanned pregnancies. Since there is no safe, infertile period as such during which it is impossible to get pregnant abstinence from sex is considered to be a sure shot way to prevent pregnancy. In addition to abstinence which may not always be possible there are many reliable methods of contraception which can be used to avoid getting pregnant. These include:

  • Birth control pills.
  • Barrier methods of contraception like male or female condoms, cervix covers like diaphragms and cervical caps.
  • Sterilisation methods such as vasectomy for men and tubal ligation for women.

How to Avoid an Unplanned Pregnancy?

Have a quick look at some of the common ways to prevent an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy.

1. Oral Sex - Penetrating sex can cause a woman to get pregnant. On the other hand oral sex which involves caressing the breast, neck and shoulders, kissing and hugging can make a couple please each other with zero risk of conception happening. This is an excellent alternative for couples keen on exploring their sexuality without going through the hassles of having an unwanted baby.

2. Taking Contraceptives - It is one of the most tried and tested method available for a lot of women to avoid pregnancy. Research has indicated that birth control pills are 95% to 98% effective in preventing a woman from going through the process of ovulation. This basically implies that an egg does not mature and fertilise during the monthly cycle thereby preventing pregnancy.

However, it is important to understand that birth control pills are just not any other drug which you can purchase from the nearest drug store and start taking. Medical advice must be sought before using birth control pills since contraceptives are designed to control the release of hormones in our body.

3. Using Condoms - It is an inexpensive and most convenient way to avoid conception. It offers almost 100 % protection provided it is used properly and does not get torn during intercourse. It is one of the most reliable methods to avoid the unwanted consequences of sexual penetration.

4. Avoiding Alcohol and Drugs - Though not directly related to getting pregnant it is advisable for people to stay away from drugs and alcohol which is capable of interfering with their normal behavior. Under the influence of alcohol many a times people get into trouble with their parents, get robbed or mugged and unknowingly engage in sexual intercourse which may result in an unplanned pregnancy and loss of virginity.

Unplanned pregnancy is considered to be an indicator of premarital sex which is a social stigma in most developed and developing countries. In fact in many countries people are forced to marry in order to prevent children being born illegitimate and out of wedlock. Such marriages being involuntary in nature often have poor outcomes. Unplanned pregnancy can be a cause of stress or social stigma for many.

Despite modern contraception, better provision of sex education, and greater scientific knowledge of human reproduction, a number of factors contribute to the risk of unplanned pregnancy in our modern society. Educating teenagers about ways and means of avoiding an unplanned pregnancy must be made a part of all sex education curriculums in school. This will ensure that kids grow up and develop fully mature minds before having to face the enormous responsibility of raising children of their own.
