In today’s advanced world, most parents believe that if they do include vitamins supplements in their child’s daily regime, they are depriving their child of proper and overall growth. Pharmaceutical companies advertise dietary supplements in such a way that parents get convinced that they their children absolutely need additional supplements for vitamins and minerals to grow up healthy. However, experts are of the opinion that most children can get the required vitamins and minerals through a regular balanced diet. Because the human body is incapable of producing sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals, the requirement has to be fulfilled through a healthy balanced diet.

What is a Balanced Diet for Growing Kids?

A balanced diet contains sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals along with providing adequate quantity of proteins, fat and carbohydrate. In general, a balanced diet should include:

  • Dairy products like cheese, milk and milk products such as yogurt;
  • Fresh fruits and green, leafy vegetables;
  • Meat, fish, eggs and chicken to fulfil the body’s protein requirements;
  • Whole grains like brown rice and oats.

Essential Vitamins and Minerals for Kids and their Significance

  • Vitamin A – This is responsible for normal growth and development of your kid. It also helps in making your child’s eyes healthy, get healthy skin and strengthen immune system. It can be found in milk and milk products, eggs and colourful vegetables.
  • Vitamin B – Vitamin B2, B3, B6 and B12 provides energy to the body, makes nervous and circulatory system stronger. It is found in meat, fish, eggs, chicken, nuts, milk, cheese, soybeans and beans.
  • Vitamin C – This vitamin is found in citrus fruits, tomatoes, green vegetables, kiwi and strawberries. It helps make skin and muscles healthier as well as have proper growth.
  • Vitamin D – Although the best source of Vitamin D is sunlight, it can also be obtained by including milk and milk products, egg yolk and fish oil in diet of your kid. This vitamin helps promote bone and teeth formation and also helps the body absorb calcium present in the food properly.
  • Calcium – Calcium can be obtained by including milk, milk products, cheese, yogurt, tofu and orange juice that includes calcium. Calcium makes bones stronger and helps in the proper growth and development of your child.
  • Iron – Iron makes red blood cells healthier and promotes muscle strength. Iron can be obtained through beef, red meat, pork, spinach and beans.

Are Vitamin Supplements necessary for your Child?

Before you start giving any kind of supplement to your kid, it is very important you find out whether your kid needs it or not. Kids who need vitamin supplements are:

  • Kids who do not eat healthy food regularly
  • Lack proper nutrition in food
  • Do not partake of a balanced diet
  • Do not eat adequate amount of food
  • Involved in physically active sports
  • Kids with continual heath problems
  • Kids on heavy medication
  • Kids who eat a lot of fast food
  • Kids on vegetarian diet
  • Kids who include lot of carbonated soda
You can provide proper nutrition by adding variety to the food of your child. Large quantity of food is not important, but varieties and right choice is vital. Spread the nutrition into several small meals and let your child enjoy everything he east.

Nice article....i think it is very apt for parents who just give supplements to their kids just for the sake of maintaining health. Vitamin supplements can be harmful so one should never take these without a prescription.

Only kids who have some deficiency may need supplements...otherwise kids do not have to take them. Intake of supplements may be harmful to kids, if taken without a doctor's prescription....

I do not feel that kids need vitamin supplements. Healthy balanced diet will suffice for all the nutrients that a kid needs.
