Diet for 3 Month old Baby

The diet of a 3 month old infant is usually on breast-feeding and only in the case of unavailability of mother or mother’s milk, she should be given outside food supplements. There are some factors that should be taken into account before deciding anything concerned with the infant. Read on to know more about how to observe the infant grow and decide how many times she should be fed in a day.

A 3 month old baby is exclusively on breast feeding and except on special circumstances. Only if the mother is not available or there is some other problem, the baby should be given outside food. It can also be done when the infant has milk allergy and the substitutes should be very cautiously selected. The pediatrician should be consulted in any case as the infant is in a very tender age. Cereals are added only after the completion of 4 months.

There is no such thing called diet for a 3 month old infant. It depends on the weight of the baby how much she should be fed and taken care of about it. Breast milk is best for the babies for first 4 months because cereals and other food items are included only after the baby completes 4 months. The doctor will give you appropriate advice after observing your child’s weight and growth rate.

It is only after few days or after completing the first month, your baby will start demanding for milk and you will come to know about the requirements. There are many changes that are observed during the first four months and gradually starts sleeping for longer hours after few days. The main thing is that you should be assured that your infant is properly fed. You can find this if your baby seems alert and active, her weight is growing steadily and takes the feed 6 – 8 times a day. Also make sure she wets and soils the diapers at some intervals of time.

How to Observe Bowel Movement and Growth

The bowel movement also decreases after one month and you will observe that your 1 month old does not have bowel movement after each meal. You should consult your doctors only when the infant does not have any bowel movement for three consecutive days.

The first 4 months are periods of rapid growth and you will observe that the amount of milk your infant used to consume has increased. However the mother’s body automatically increases the production and the demand and supply is maintained within few days.

Care for 3 Month old Baby

Usually in addition to breast feed the infant of 3 month old should get Vitamin D supply. This is done with the help of morning sunrays. It is very crucial that you keep in mind that the infant should be given only morning sun as the heat is light and has maximum benefits. After two months, with the consent of the doctor you can start feeding him with juice, water and other food items in fluid state as additional supplements.

How Much should you Feed?

There is no such formula or rule that decides how much a 3 month old baby can consume. It completely depends on the growth and development of the infant. As the infant grows, the quantity increases normally. It is very easy to feed the baby when he is on breast-feeding.

But when he is fed with the feeding bottle it becomes very difficult to decide beforehand how much the infant is going to consume. Usually he will consume 4 or 5 ounces of milk in the beginning of third month and may be one additional ounce will get added to each feed by the end of the third month.

In the first month, your infant will most often sleep and you will have to make him feed at regular intervals. As the infant starts growing, the feeding process changes and other food items are added to it. The only thing is that you will observe that the infant will increase the quantity gradually and the number of times will get reduced. You will observe the changes within every week and this will help you decide and feed your infant accordingly.
