Lord Krishna and the Old Fruit Seller

Helping others without expecting anything in return is what being helpful is all about. Read an enlightening story from Lord Krishna’s Childhood on how he blessed an old fruit seller for helping him to satiate his hunger.

The stories from Lord Krishna’s childhood are very popular. One such story is the story of the old fruit seller. An old lady wandered from place-to-place to sell fruits that she grew in her garden to earn her livelihood. One day while wandering she reached Gokul, a place which reverberated with the laughter of Gopis and Lord Krishna’s playfulness. She wandered the entire Gokul but no one bought any of her fruits. She was depressed as she could not earn anything that day.

While she moved ahead in depression, she saw a beautiful house and a few kids playing in the courtyard. She stood with a basket full of fruits near the courtyard watching young kids playing. Lord Krishna was one of those kids. He was tired as well as hungry. He saw the lady standing with the basket of fruits and went near her. He was very tempted to have the fruits. So, he asked the old lady to do him a favour by giving all her fruits to him as he was hungry and wanted to have them all.

The poor lady was unaware that the Lord himself in disguise of a divine child was testing the virtues in her. The lady felt pity for the little kid who was asking for the fruits. She wanted to help the little hungry kid so she gave all her fruits to him for free. She gave up her means of livelihood for that day.

After eating the fruits, the little boy asked the woman what she expects in return.
Listening to the boy, the lady was hopeful about getting something as a livelihood in the return of fruits. As she did not expect anything great in return from the child she just said that she wants some grains in the exchange of fruits so that she can go home and cook them for herself. Lord Krishna went inside his house and he got a handful of grains. The lady was very disappointed at the sight of the handful of grains but then she accepted those grains as the blessing of God as the little boy thanked her and handed those grains to her.

She came back home with those handfuls of grains and decided that she will cook those grains and eat her meal of the day.  As she opened the basket, she was shocked to see that it was full of diamonds and pearls. This magic could happen only because of Lord Krishna’s blessings for helping him fill his hungry stomach.

Moral: Being helpful and kind never goes in vain.
