Vedanta Desika's Act of Forgiveness

Practising forgiveness is one of the best ways to end bitterness and improve bonding. Read on to find an inspiring story on how forgiveness can change one’s life.

Vedānta Deśika was a renowned scholar of Hindu Dharma. He was not proud of his intelligence. As a person, he was very down to earth and practiced saintly virtues. Despite being so knowledgeable and eminent, he was kind to others. However, some of his peers were jealous of his goodness and popularity. So, they decide to put him down by playing a nasty trick.

They collected all of their shoes and made a garland out of them. They hung this garland of shoes at the entrance of Vedānta’s door in such a way that it would hit his head when he would open the door. They wanted to have fun watching Vedanta getting hurt due to the shoes. So, in the morning they hid outside Vedanta’s house in such a way that they could secretly watch the fun.

As Vedanta opened the door, the shoes hit his head. All of his peers who were hiding outside his house came out to make fun of him and ridicule him for hitting his head on their shoes. They expected Vedanta to get furious but he started composing a verse instead. He said that to reach almighty some follow spiritual path whereas some do kind deeds. But I will reach almighty by worshipping the shoes of Lord Vishnu’s devotees. Listening to these words of Vedānta Deśika his peers felt ashamed of their behaviuor. So, out of guilt, they asked for forgiveness from him. As Vedānta Deśika was a kind and virtuous soul, he forgave them.

Moral: Forgiveness is a virtue of almighty and his devotees and followers!
