Tips for Dealing with Nausea during Pregnancy

Are you finding difficult to cope with nausea? Here are some helpful tips for dealing with nausea during pregnancy.

Nausea is a positive sign for your pregnancy, which shows that your hormone (human chorionic gonadotrophin) levels are high enough to allow your baby to grow and develop. But do not worry if you do not feel nausea, you might one of the lucky ladies who do not feel sick during pregnancy. Out of 10, 8 women feel nausea in pregnancy, accompanied with or without vomiting. This feeling goes down once you are your placenta starts maintaining and nourishing your baby i.e. between 12 weeks and 14 weeks. Here are few tips to deal with this sickness.

Keep Snacks Handy

Do not keep your stomach empty for 8-9 hours as you feel nausea due to low blood sugar. The first thing you should do after getting up is to eat a few crackers and rest for 15 minutes. Keep a baggie with a slice of unbuttered toast or plain biscuit or cracker handy with you. It works well for many women. You can set your alarm 10 minutes before to allow you to have time for snack before you are pushed for time in the mornings.

Watch What You Eat

During pregnancy, everyone says eat what you want, but you should check your craving, as nausea is linked to lower consumption of cereals and higher intake of sweeteners, sugars, caffeine, alcohol, and meat. Eat moderately and often instead of filling stomach at once. Have a glass of refreshing lemonade. Eat bland food like mashed potatoes, broth, soft brown bread or whole wheat noodles, earthy brown rice, mushroom soup; crunchy celery sticks, nuts, apple slices, fruity popsicles or watermelon to get relief from nausea. Avoid fatty or fried foods because of the strong smell.

Get Plenty of Rest

Nausea can be aggravated when you are tired, so get enough rest and try taking quick 15-minute power naps during the day. You may feel you need to sleep more during the first trimester. Ditch all your work or keep your household chores aside and get some good sleep. Shut out the world for a while using some earplugs and a sleep mask, and see how fresh you feel when you wake up.

Drink Adequate Amount of Water

Dehydration aggravates nausea, so it is advisable to drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeinated drinks, as they cause dehydration. Avoid sugar sugary juices. Sip small amounts of fluid often during the day. Prepare some chamomile tea, allow it to cool, and sip it throughout the day. Avoid drinking fluids just before or immediately after a meal.

Change Your Lifestyle Strategies

Here are some simple lifestyle changes that you can follow to deal with nausea during pregnancy.
  • Feeling hot can add to nausea, so open the windows and doors and get plenty of fresh air and avoid warm places.
  • Grate some portion of lemon or apple peel into a square of muslin, tie it, and keep it handy as its fresh scent help beat nausea.
  • Try some ginger tea but do not take more than 3g of ginger per day as it causes heat.
  • Keep away from the smells that trigger nausea in you.
If every basic tip fails to control your nausea, you should make a visit to your doctor who can prescribe you medications or other alternative remedies for beating nausea. Before trying any remedies for dealing with nausea during pregnancy, you must consult your doctor to find out if it is safe for you or not. Do not take any over-the counter medicine as it can be harmful for you and your baby.
