She wants to know why weight loss can happen in the last trimester of pregnancy and what the various consequences of weight loss are.

Weight Loss in Third Trimester

Would-be mothers become habituated with the increase in weight since the starting of their pregnancy. It comes as a blow to them when they suddenly discover that they have lost weight and it is their last trimester. The average loss of weight should be less than 10% of the total body weight of would-be moms. If the loss is more than this then it is a matter which has to be discussed with the doctor.
There are several factors which can cause loss in weight and it can happen to many pregnant women. Sudden weight loss in last trimester could rarely be a matter of concern but such unexpected changes must be reported to doctors to get their views and have the required tests done. There could be one or combination of many factors which could lead to loss in weight in would-be mothers in their last trimester. Here are some factors that may be responsible for drop in weight during last trimester of pregnancy.

Change in Food Habit during last trimester

During third trimester, eating habits of many pregnant women get changed. As pregnancy advances, the foetus’s size increases and creates pressure on the abdomen of mother. Creation of pressure may lead to loss of appetite or mothers would feel full even after they have eaten small amount of food. Eating less would definitely cause loss of weight in would-be mothers. It is important that would-be mothers start taking small meals in frequent intervals or take snacks to ensure their body get proper nourishment even when they are in their last trimester.

Elimination from the Body during Last Trimester

With the advancement of pregnancy, the body of would-be mom becomes ready for the childbirth. During first and second trimester, extra fluids get accumulated in the body which get eliminated in the last trimester. The more nearer the end of pregnancy becomes symptoms like increased urination, sweating, loose bowel etc become very common for the would-be moms. All these cause elimination of fluid from the body and body weight is lost.

Deliberate Weight loss in Pregnancy

Obese or not, pregnant women should never take attempt to lose weight during later period of pregnancy. The last trimester of pregnancy is a critical phase and the unborn baby should get full nutrition through the diets of its mother. Under no circumstances overweight or obese would-be moms should jump start weight loss routine.

Tips to Combat Weight Loss Due to Appetite loss

It is mandatory for the would-be mothers to take care of their body properly during their last trimester. Only when would-be mothers remain healthy they could deliver healthy baby and could undergo the strain of postpartum period. Here are some tips given using which pregnant women could handle weight loss in last trimester. However, pregnant women should consult their doctor as well before making changing in their diet.
  • Eating of 6-7 servings of whole grains
  • Eating 3-4 servings of dairy products
  • Eating 3-4 servings of proteins
  • Eat snacks at frequent interval
  • Take in water or other fluid throughout the day
  • Lie down and take rest at frequent interval
Fluctuation of weight is normal during pregnancy. It is important for would-be moms to know about the weight fluctuations that are normal so that in case any diversion from the set benchmark, medical advice must be taken.
