Tips for Dealing with Children who Do Not Listen

It is not easy to deal with children who do not listen. Here are few ways which parents can follow to make their children listen to them.

For toddlers it is very natural to throw tantrums for making their demands heard. It is the responsibility of the parents to tackle such situations very carefully. Here are some tips discussed how to make your children listen to you without being harsh.

Do Not Lose Your Temper

When your kids are not listening to you try not to force them at that particular time. Yelling at kids or talking in a stern tone does not really work when your kids are not in a mood to listen to you. So try to maintain your calm when you find your kid in a spoilt mood.

Give Rewards to Kids

When there is no other way to make your kids listen to you, then start a reward system. This will please your kids as well as serve your purpose to pacify your children. Give them their favourite chocolate or a doughnut if they listen to you. For every good work that they do, there should be some points and on the collection of certain number of points they should get a reward. For every time they disobey you, some points will be deducted. But never make it a regular habit of bribing your kids to make them listen to you.

Timeouts

This is perhaps the best way to punish your kids without hurting them. Timeouts allow some time to your kids to think of their misdeeds and reconcile for their wrongs. It gives them time to get to their jovial mood. Be consistent and see the changes in your kids in just a few days. Warn them before sending them to timeouts and when they continue disobeying you try out timeouts to get them to the right track.

Firmly Say “No”

It is sometimes necessary to say “no” to your kids. Do not always cater to their demands whenever they ask you for something. Firmly stick to your decisions and set out clear rules so that your kids know that which things will not get permissions.

Only One Task at a Time

Never bog down your kids to perform multiple tasks at one time. Start with the most important thing to do at first, and when this task is done, move on to the next task.

Model a Good Side

Kids love to follow what they see their parents doing. If you are yourself not following rules in the house you can never expect your kids to follow the rules of the house. So before imbibing disciplines in kids, try to be a good role model to them so that they can learn the best things from you.

Give Choices to Kids

When your children show reluctance to do a particular thing that you had asked them to do, instead of forcing them to complete the task, it would be wiser if you give choices to select. Make them choose what they want to do. It is seen that when you make your kids a part of the decision they are more likely to do what you expect them to do.

Let Your Kids Know What You Expect From Them

Let your kids be aware of what you expect from them and which behaviour is not expected. By setting clear rules and being consistent you are sending them signals for the correct behaviour. The next time they try to give a deaf ear to what you say they will know that they are doing something against the expected behaviour and that they may have to face consequences for that.
Try to spend as much time as you can with your kids so that both of you understand each other thoroughly. Communication with your kids properly is the only way for you to get things right when everything else fails.

Why do some children do not listen to their parents at all? How to handle children who do not listen to parents? What are the ways to make children listen to what parents say? Discuss here.

Diverting attention of kids when they are not listening to some other toys or their favourite cartoon is a good idea.

It is very difficult to make kids listen. Sometimes we have to listen to them when they don't listen. It is the last option.
