Top 5 Discipline Dos and Don'ts

Disciplining kids is not easy but this task can be made easier by following certain discipline strategies. Have a quick look at the top 5 discipline dos and don’ts right away.

Parenting is an amazing experience, though it can be tough and challenging for you. So, if you do not decide your discipline “dos and don’ts” from beforehand, you may end up troubled and disgusted. Raising children is not an easy job at all – and you need to set the ground rules and take actions accordingly. Dealing with your kids’ tantrums can grey your hair – but you need to take effective steps to ensure that you impart the perfect behavioural lessons to them. Here are a few discipline do’s and don’ts that will surely help you through this phase of handling with your child’s tantrums.

Discipline Dos

Have a quick look at the top 5 discipline dos.
  1. Do Enforce Rules You Set

Set clear rules in your house and explain them clearly to your kids. Enforce the rules you set and stick to them without compromising.
  2. Do Give Clear and Simple Directions

You should give clear and easy directions to your kids. Ask your kids, “I need you to go to bed”; instead of “Would you like to go to bed?”
  3. Do Allow Emotions

Allow your kids to experience their emotions, to eventually cease these tantrums once you meet their emotions with support, understanding, and acceptance.
  4. Do Catch Your Children at Being Good

Always praise your kids. Making your kids realise that you are proud of them or you like what they are doing are very motivating for them.
  5. Do Stay Calm

Remain calm and cool no matter how much your children are crying, nagging, or acting out and hitting loudly. If you stick to a plan, your children know that you are serious.

Other Dos

  • Do accept that your kids have not learned how to react or communicate yet and are behaving perfectly natural, although annoying.
  • Do empathise because it goes a long way if you can allow your children to know how much you feel for them.
  • Do redirect if your kids do not follow your words at once.
  • Do interpret and try to decipher what your children are telling you through their behaviour.
  • Do teach once you have interpreted, because it is now time to convey through your calm words and actions.

Discipline Don’ts

Here are the top 5 discipline don’ts.
  1. Don’t Give Up

Your confidence is the key. Do not get defeated as you already are aware that these situations are unavoidable.
  2. Don’t Make a Scene

Control your frustration because you are a leader and a teacher as well, and you do not want to make fun of yourself for the kids who look up to you.
  3. Don’t Punish Always

Think before you punish for every mistake. It is better to talk out and discuss for an alternative behaviour.
  4. Don’t Be Ignorant

Do not ignore your child’s behaviour as it can be disrespectful and also ineffective if you do not follow the other steps properly.
  5. Don’t Bribe

Avoid bribing and look for alternative ways to make your children obey you and be disciplined and mannered.

Other Don’ts

  • Don’t deny feelings of your kids.
  • Don’t demand respect; you should earn it.
  • Don’t try to buy a child’s sympathy and affection.
  • Don’t expect your children to give you reasoning for every action they do.
  • Don’t expect children to behave like adults.
Remember your children look up to you. You have to take the lead and follow all the discipline do’s and don’ts. It is difficult to keep all your emotions under control when your children are pushing you off the edge, but being a role model, you should not get frustrated and start blabbering. You need to be calm and patient, and let these pass too with confidence and the given discipline dos and don’ts.

Depending on the nature the kids, parents can make their own list of discipline dos and don'ts but the list should not include yelling, shouting and hitting
