Precautions while Sleeping during Pregnancy

When Samira got the news that she is expecting, her happiness knew no bounds. But as the pregnancy progressed she started experiencing difficulties. The major trouble she suffered was sleepless nights. Due to various common problems of pregnancy such as backache, heartburns and also the expanding belly size added in to her sleepless nights. Now Samira wants to know what all the things she can do to get a sound peaceful sleep with her baby.

Why Sleeping gets Difficult in Pregnancy?

It is generally seen in first trimester of pregnancy there is no issues regarding sleep. Adequate amount of sleep is taken easily in those days. The problem occurs when the pregnancy progresses. Size of the body increases as the foetus grows in the mother’s body. So it also becomes difficult in switching over one side to another side. A would be mother can avoid this by changing some routine habits and by seeking good sleeping positions while sleeping during pregnancy.

Preventing Sleeping Difficulties during Pregnancy

Precautions of some routine habits which will help in getting sound sleep in pregnancy are:

Monitor Fluid Intake

As the day starts, starts drinking ample of fluids like water and juice, but remember to slow down near bedtime this will minimize the frequency of urination.

Go for a Walk

Have the habit of doing simple exercises like walking little bit daily in the morning which will regulates good blood circulation in your body. After dinner if possible get a nice slow walk of about 15 to 20 minutes.

Stay Away from Stress and Anxiety

Get rid of all the stress and anxiety as it also leads to sleepless night and can be harmful for would be mother and baby. For this help can be taken from our loved ones or by the doctor who would listen patiently and can provide help in getting out of stress and anxiety.

Relax Before Going to Bed

Get indulge in soothing activities before bed time like drinking a cup of milk, having a good talk about baby with your life partner, taking the name of any god you believe, reading any good article or motivating books, if possible do take a warm shower.

Avoid Spicy Food

Suffering with a heartburn problem then avoid spicy food at night and do not sleep immediately after having meal, get around minimum 2 hours time between dinner and bed time.

Follow a Healthy Routine

Have a timetable of daily routine; get a short nap in the middle of the day. Have little amount of food after every 2 to 3 hours. Do not ever keep stomach empty in these days.

Sleeping Positions during Pregnancy

Here are some precautions which you must take with respect to some sleeping positions which will help in getting sound sleep in pregnancy are:
  • As the pregnancy proceeds the size of your belly increases which leads to discomfort while lying on back as belly pushes the intestines which leads to short of breath.
  • It is always advisable to sleep on side which provides good room and support for your growing belly.
  • Sleeping on left side is best as per various doctors suggest this as it improves blood circulation too.
  • Various sleeping pillows are designed for pregnant women. You can use them after consulting your doctor to minimise your discomfort while sleeping.
  • If suffering from heartburn problem then you can prop your upper body portion with pillows not allowing any acids to come up leaving them down in the stomach. But make sure that you are comfortable in this position.
  • Do not panic while rolling from one side to another side while sleeping. It is a natural process.
Use of pillows can be done in finding a comfortable position which suits you so try experimenting with pillows. For this one can also find pillow props in the market available in different shapes and sizes so select the one you need. If you experience any discomfort make sure that you discuss it with your doctor.
