Importance of Expressing Your Love for Your Child

Importance of Expressing Your Love for Your Child

Showing children how much we love them in little ways can help to boost their self-esteem and confidence. Let us take a look at the importance of showing children how much we love them.
Showing love to your child on a regular basis is one of the best gifts you can give your children. As a parent, you must realise that love does not come with first prizes, medals and trophies. Psychologists say that most parents focus on achievement and popularity among peers which automatically weakens the parent-child relationship.
It is amazing the way an ‘I love you”from Mummy can affect a child’s self-esteem and self-worth. However, every parent does have expectations from their child and they should help them achieve their goals. This is why you need to balance expectations with unconditional love.

1. Helps in Physical and Mental Well-Being

Studies suggest that children who have grown up in loving homes fair better emotionally than those growing up in love-deficit homes. Children who have grown up in harsh environments and lack of parental love lead to high stress levels and cortisol which lead to high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and obesity. They have also proven that children who have loving mothers have a better hippocampus which focuses on memory control, learning capabilities and stress responses. Nurturing is an important part of parenting, which has to be emphasised upon.

2. Makes the Child Less Fearful of Failure

Children of overenthusiastic parents are less secure than those who have caring parents. Such children go on to develop a fear of failure which makes them feel unsafe in their environment. Parents with exceedingly high levels of expectations and criticism have children who are scared to venturing into new areas due to failure.
Merit-loving parents show affection according to a score in the test, which can affect child’s social and academic aspects of life. Sensitive parents will suggest them to improve their skills for their own enjoyment and development, not to prove themselves. A loving parent is a strong and stable foundation for a child, which instils courage in them and encourages them to take risks.

3. Stronger Sense of Self-Worth

Children who are regularly shown love by their parents have higher levels of self-confidence. They are more confident in self-expression and more in touch with themselves. On the other hand, children who do not receive such reassurance often have a low sense of worth and may become out of touch with themselves and become disconnected with the world. Parents who show affection on a regular basis boosts their children when they are having a bad day, giving their children the opportunity to shine. Children also learn that their worth is not dependent on what they have done, but who they are.

4. Teaches Them How to Love

When you show love to your children by example, they will automatically understand what it means to love. Receiving parental love from at an early makes them more compassionate beings as they can reach out, offer a hug and say ‘I love you” to someone who is hurting. Most relationship problems begin from miscommunication and lack of expression of love. Showing love to you children will lower the chances of having relationship problems in later life. Studies have also shown that those children who have seen love are more likely to show love to friends and romantic partners in later life.

5. Creates Affection Between Parent and Child

All parents want to have a loving bond with their children. Love always helps a child to cooperate better and please more easily. This lowers the chance of risky behaviour, better judgement and the ability to keep themselves away from substance abuse in college life and beyond. Expressions of love and care will also strengthen the parent-child bond during family hardships. Children resent controlling behaviour, but disciplining them with love makes them feel cared for.
All parents want their children to live a successful, confident and happy life. However, love and care makes all the difference between a well-adjusted and cheerful and an insecure child. Parents need to evaluate their parenting style and show love with an understanding smile and a warm hug.

Why is it important to show children that we love them? How to show children that we love them? What can happen if children are deprived of love? Discuss here.
