Being healthy and fit is very important during pregnancy. When pregnancy is taken as normal phase, it is easy to include all the normal and routine rhythm of life. One can indulge in daily regular physical activity to maintain a healthy body after consulting a doctor. Obviously, healthy body needs healthy foods.

Food consumed during pregnancy should be chosen and cooked carefully. It is not needed to eat large meals, but it is needed to eat healthy meals and also in between meals to maintain stamina. Most women develop nausea, vomiting during pregnancy. In spite of all the early morning sickness, it is important to keep the pregnant women fit by ensuring that she continues to take healthy food.

Foods to Eat during Pregnancy

Here is a list of healthy foods that should be included in the diet of a pregnant woman.
  • Foods rich in folic acid like spinach, asparagus, oranges, pomegranates, radish, celery
  • Foods rich in vitamin A like milk, yogurt, and carrots
  • Bread which is specially whole meal and brown bread
  • Foods like sweet potatoes
  • Foods rich in Vitamin C and D. It is also important to take vitamin and mineral supplements as prescribed by doctor to compensate for the general deficiency in the body
  • Foods rich in magnesium like pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds
  • Few quick snacks like peanuts, sprouts, fresh fruits can be consumed on move and also in between work timings
  • Dry fruits like apricot, raisins, walnuts, almonds are good foods to boost the energy levels instantly
  • Homemade fresh juices are also very good when taken with honey or a pinch of salt
  • Homemade milkshakes are good foods and keep hunger at bay for long hours
  • Peanut butter is a tasty and a good healthy food
  • Banana is a all time energy food, which is available everywhere
  • Oatmeal is a good rich food to be consumed whenever hunger strikes at odd hours
All these above foods regulate the body, balance the diet patterns and keep a pregnant woman healthy and hearty. Vitamin C foods protect the body cells from any damages. It also keeps the bones strong. Above all the food intake keeps the immune system perfect and protects the pregnant women from seasonal and airborne diseases. However, few salad foods should be consumed raw as they are easily absorbed by the body. Foods like tomatoes, kiwi foods, oranges and strawberries are very good when consumed raw. Always over cooked food looses all its nutrients. Also pregnant women must ensure that she lets her doctor know what she is eating and consult him or her before including any new food item in her diet.

Foods to Avoid during Pregnancy

Here is the list of foods that should be avoided during pregnancy.
  • Very spicy foods
  • Very creamy foods
  • Highly saturated foods
  • Deep fries
  • Salty foods
  • Sugary foods
  • Foods with heavy preservatives
The above foods should always be avoided as they play with the smooth functioning of sugar levels and blood pressure levels in a pregnant woman.

Frankly speaking, a pregnant woman should not be deprived of any kind of foods which she likes to eat provided that these foods are healthy and hygienic. Safe exercises and a little breathing exercise done under the supervision of a certified trainer or doing daily chores should be fine as long as one is comfortable. Active life in pregnancy will surely help in having smooth labour. Appetite comes with eating. So it is important for pregnant women to eat healthy, exercise daily under expert’s supervision, stay fit and maintain good health to have a smooth delivery and a healthy child.
