Tips on Foods to be Avoided during Pregnancy

Following healthy eating habits during pregnancy to ensure well being for both of you is a must. Find here the list of foods that you should avoid during pregnancy.

While it is necessary you eat well all throughout your life, it is more important that you stress on healthy eating habits during pregnancy. You need to get a healthy balance of minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins and all other nutrients that ensure wellbeing for both of you.
Here we have listed some foods that you should preferably avoid during pregnancy. Please take a look below:

1. Raw Meat

Under cooked or raw meat can be very harmful, as it increases the chances of contamination with salmonella, bacteria and toxoplasmosis.

2. Deli Meat

This is known to increase chances of a miscarriage. Deli meat is contaminated with listeria that can cross your placenta and infect the foetus inside. This increases the chances of blood poisoning that can lead to fatal consequences. So it is better to avoid this kind of meat.

3. Alcohol

You must stay away from it completely when you are pregnant. Evidences have shown total abstinence from alcohol is necessary while you are carrying. In fact it is a must to quit alcohol much early before conceiving.

4. Caffeine

You must avoid drinks and foods containing caffeine during your pregnancy. You must not consume more than 300mg of caffeine per day. Thus, you need to limit your coffee, tea, cola and chocolate consumption. Too much of caffeine consumption can result in miscarriage and low birth weight.

5. Peanuts

It is better to avoid peanuts or peanut butter in pregnancy or while you are breastfeeding. This is particularly true if you are allergic to peanuts. Experts suggest you change your eating patterns in case you have a history of allergy in your family. In these cases, the chances of your baby developing peanut allergy become more acute.

6. Animal Liver

Even though liver and products of liver are known to be good sources of foliate, these are also high in concentrations of A vitamin. 100 gm of liver may offer around 13,000 to 40,000ug of A vitamin, which is very high than the required amount for pregnant woman. Thus, doctors suggest pregnant women to stay away from food supplements that are high in this vitamin. It is thus better to avoid foods like cod liver oil, liver sausage or liver pate.
However, this does not mean you need to avoid other foods such as eggs, cheese or milk that are good sources of the A vitamin.

7. Fatty or Sugary Foods

Foods containing artificial sugar, fizzy drinks and fast foods should be preferably avoided in pregnancy. Apart from the fact these have very little nutritional value; these also increase your chances of getting pregnancy diabetes. Thus, make sure you take them occasionally and not every day. It is very important you remain in good health rather than suffer from heartburn or indigestion.

8. Cold Meats

It is better to be careful with salami, Parma ham or chorizo during pregnancy. These are uncooked foods and simply fermented and cured. These foods increase chances of contamination with toxoplasmosis-causing parasites. You need to see the labels to know if these needs to be cooked or they are ready to be taken.
In case you are eating out in restaurants, you need to ask about the foods served to the concerned staffs to avoid any sorts of contamination.
You need to take all precautionary measures rather than inviting any fresh trouble during these days. Thus, make sure to discuss with your doctor before trying something new or completely avoid foods than cause discomfort. Reading the labels before buying is also very essential.
Apart from this, you need to maintain the basic hygiene standards and wash your hands before and after your food. You need to also make sure the utensils are washed thoroughly and foods are cooked to the right temperature.

What kind of foods should be avoided during pregnancy? Why is it necessary to have a healthy diet during pregnancy? What are the effects of including unhealthy foods in the diet during pregnancy? Discuss here.
