Feminist or Man Hater?

Feminist or Man Hater?

Why is it that feminists tend to be thought of as man-haters? They are two entirely different entities. Read on.

If you tell people that you are a feminist, and most will assume that you are a man hater. Why is it that feminism tends to bring along with it the tag of man-hating? When Jhanvi made a statement about how she hates men a few years ago, Ravi said "Oh no, not another feminist!" No, Jhanvi was certainly not a feminist. She had recently broken up with her boyfriend, and was heartbroken, and for a while she directed her anger at all men. She was not into fighting for her rights as a woman, nor did she have any desire to be a career woman. All she really wanted was to get married to her boyfriend and become a housewife. After her dreams were shattered she went around cursing men for a year before she fell in love again. She is now happily married, but she still hates all men other than her husband, and her father! And no, she is definitely not a feminist.

First of all, being a feminist does NOT mean that you are a man-hater. If you were a man-hater, you would very simply call yourself a man-hater, and not a feminist. Simply hating men does not turn you into a feminist, or vice versa.

True, there are many women who hate men, and some of these women tend to call themselves feminists. There are feminists that do hate men, but they do so because of their own personal reasons, and do not represent feminism as it stands.

Often men tend to get defensive when they meet a woman who calls herself a feminist. There is really no reason to. A feminist does not want to put men down in order to pull women up. What she wants is to create awareness of the fact that women deserve equal rights and opportunity as men.

We all agree that men and women are intrinsically different, and are the happier for it, but no sex is superior to the other. Men and women are all human beings, and as such deserve basic human rights and to be treated with dignity. This fact is laid down in the Charter of the United Nations and in the Declaration of Human Rights. No one should be discriminated against on the basis of their sex, race, religion, caste, colour… While a woman does legally enjoy many rights, not many women are aware of these rights. Feminists fight for the recognition of these rights, and to increase awareness amongst women. For example, a woman cannot be fired because she is pregnant, and she is entitled to a certain amount of maternity leave without pay. If a woman fights for these rights, she is certainly not fighting against the dignity of man! She is simply fighting to enforce her rights as a human being.

Yes, I am a feminist, but I do not hate men. I am a working woman, though my work hours are far less than those of my husband. I have 2 beautiful children and what I enjoy most in the world is spending time with them. Family is more important to me than my career, but I have had the freedom of choice in making this decision. I stand up for my rights as a human being. I have one son and one daughter, and would never dream of according different treatment to them. I will provide my daughter will all the opportunities I would to my son, because I believe that they are both equally capable, and that is what makes me a feminist.

Men should not complain about that though because we apparently can't criticize anything women do, and women have SUCH a harder life as men (right!). Then some feminist comes and STILL complains about something she wants. Men should bow down even closer to the ground for women. At some point it's enough. Men are fed up with our feminist society, and certainly with feminists. Being a feminist today is like being that spoiled kid that wants a second Ipod because she didn't like the color of her first one. It's enough, the world doesn't only revolve around women.

William, let's be clear on what most men who complain are complaining about. In the past, men have enjoyed an advantage in society and the law. Many women could not own property or vote. The law recognized this in many ways and in other ways gave women an advantage, but overall the advantage was to the man. Since women couldn't get jobs, men had to provide alimony. Since children came from women's bodies, they were considered women's property and so men had to pay child support. Women also enjoyed many societal advantages such as more lenient sentencing and the belief that there were crimes that they couldn't commit such as rape or child abuse. Women, who sexually molesti adolescent males, have been only recently recognized. Men who are raped by women or are victims of domestic violence are still not believed in society.

Women have made tremendous strides in society as well as the law. The strides for men have been much slower. Decades after failure to pay child support became punishable as a crime did interference with visitation rights become grudgingly recognized as a crime. In Illinois it's a misdemeanor. It can only be enforced if there is a consistent pattern of violation and the perpetrator, usually a woman, receives the lightest sanction allowed under the law. The women's lobby knew they couldn't prevent the men's movement from implementing the reform so they ensured that it would be as worthless as possible. Right or wrong, I'm guessing right, this was attributed to feminists.
Rape has now become the only crime where a person is assumed guilty until proven innocent. Rape shield laws are in place to protect the accuser, but the accused picture and name can be freely advertised. A woman in England filed eight false rape charges, but none of the previous charges could be brought up as evidence in the future cases.

She was even prosecuted for the first seven instances. False rape is one of the few crimes that do not get prosecuted especially if there haven't been any arrests yet. In my opinion men rightly blame feminists for this. I've heard the argument that if even one accuser is prosecuted for a false claim, it could convince someone else not to file a legitimate claim. The great philosophers believed that it was better for 100 guilty to go free so that 1 innocent not be locked up. It seems that feminists have reversed it so that it is better for 100 innocent to be jailed or killed as the case may be rather then 1 guilty person go free. Even the laws are gendered, Violence Against Women Act. Of course since women are still viewed as being incapable of rape, this only affects men.

I think you're misunderstanding something very important. In general, men don't like feminists because women have every little thing they want in Western countries. They're no only treated equal, today they're actually treated better as men in many ways. Women have a better life, sometimes at the cost of men. Noone cares when men get disadvantaged by women.
