A 24-Month-Old Toddler's Development (2-Year-Old)

It is very important to understand the developmental milestones to stimulate the overall development of a toddler. Have a look at the growth and development of a 2-year-old toddler.
You need to have a good sense of humour and a lot more patience to be able to handle your little one all through the day. Being a mom of a 2 year old takes a lot.
Here we shall take a look at her growth and developments, so that you know what to expect next:

Growth and Development of a 2 Year Old Toddler

She has started losing her baby fat and you may not notice those folds in her legs and hands. Her head now looks more proportionate with the rest of her body. Her trunk and legs shall start lengthening now. Her pudgy belly shall be flattened now and she will look straighter on her back. Her long body will give the appearance of a preschooler now.
However, she may still not be eating the amount you would want her to. She will also develop sharp motor skills now. You may now find her moving through the corners easily, jumping up and down the stairs and running smoothly than before. She might now take up more challenging tasks when you take her out now.

Communication Skills of a 2 Year Old Toddler

While she has already mastered her gross motor skills like standing, crawling, walking and sitting, you will see her develop her communication skills now. Her language development skill shall be very fast now. She shall develop her expressive as well as receptive language.
She is now capable of understanding most of the things you tell her. She can follow your questions and commands as well. However, every child follows her own path of development and thus it would be unfair to compare your toddler with others.
Your toddler may repeat some of her favourite words now. In no time you shall find her putting the words to frame a sentence.
Parents play an important role in language development of toddlers. Read books to her and hold conversations to help her listen to some new words. Although you may show her interactive videos, it cannot replace the loving conversation with you. Reading time for 5 minutes every day too can help a lot in her brain development.

Cognitive Developments:

To understand what is going on in your toddler’s head you can simply watch her play. You may find her play more complex games now. She has become more attentive than before and can stick to an activity for long. She has been developing her thought process with new ideas, mental concepts and thoughts.
Some of the behaviours that you may notice in her are:
  1. Repeating the same words or actions.
  2. Trying to test her independence and assert her self confidence.
  3. She now aims to become a separate identity, but shall suffer from separation anxieties as well. This too shall get better with time.
Manipulations and puzzles are some of the best ways you can help develop her eye-hand coordination and motor skills. This shall also help to stimulate her brain.

Sharing Problems:

Your toddler shall show preference for other's toys and belongings. It will be difficult for her to get a hold of the concept of sharing because of her ego centric nature.
This is the time when she shall slowly learn about impulse control, develop understanding about other's feelings and learn to communicate with her friends. She shall learn these better in a playschool, otherwise you may help her learn these when among a group of friends.
This is the time when you and your toddler learn so many things from each other! So, good luck mommies and wish you all the luck in raising your little one.

What milestones are observed in a 2-year-old child? What is parental role in language development of a toddler? How can parents hold conversations with a 2-year-old toddler? Discuss here.
