Tips for Burping the Baby

Burping baby is very important aspect of feeding. Burping baby is necessary to make sure that the air which is swallowed by the baby while feeding is eliminated. Read on to find more about the tips on burping the baby.

Burping a baby is a very important aspect of feeding a newborn baby. First time parents often find the task of feeding a baby intimidating since they do not know what to expect. In fact feeding can become an exciting task and an enjoyable experience to bond with a newborn if parents are able to figure out the right way to feed a baby.

Burping basically helps to eliminate air that babies tend to swallow during feeding. Air swallowed during feedings can cause excessive gas and discomfort in an infant. If a baby is not burped frequently the swallowed air can cause spitting up, gassiness and crankiness. Research has indicated that excessive gas is the primary cause of colic in most babies.

When to Burp a Baby?

The right time to burp a baby is when she is taking a break while feeding or has reduced her pace of feeding. Never burp a baby while she is still feeding. Attempting to burp a baby while she is feeding can make her cry and swallow more air as a result.

How to Burp a Baby?

Burping must be done gently by patting a baby’s back. Gentle movements involving rubbing or patting of a baby’s back is enough to burp a baby. There is absolutely no need for parents to be rough or make vigorous movement to make an infant burp.

What are Some of the Positions to Make a Baby Burp?

There are different positions which can be used to burp a baby. All these positions are equally effective in burping the baby. Over a period of time and with practice most parents will be able to figure out the position which is best suited for themselves as well as the infant for burping.

Some babies prefer to be burped only in a specific position while others can easily be made to burp with any method. Hence if a particular position does not work care givers may have try out other positions for burping an infant. At times simply moving an infant from one position to another can also make her burp.

Common Positions Which are Useful to Burp a Baby

Here are some common positions which are useful to make your baby burp.

Over the Shoulder: to make a baby burp in this position the parent or care giver must sit straight while holding the baby in such a manner that the infant’s chin rests on their shoulder. The baby’s back and bottom must be supported with one arm while making use of the other hand to pat and rub the baby’s back gently for burping.

Sitting On the Lap: In this position the baby must be made to sit on the care giver’s lap with her body leaning forward. The care giver must support the infant’s chest and head with one hand while making use of the other hand to gently pat the infant’s back and burp her.

Laying the Baby On the Lap: In this position the infant is made to face down or lie on her stomach while being gently patted for burping. Excessive gas can cause babies to be cranky. Hence infants need to be burped to relieve them of the discomfort. Burping is an art which most new parents will master over a period of time. There is no single best position to burp a baby. The only thing to bear in mind is the correct time to burp a baby - which is when she is taking a break while feeding or has reduced her pace of feeding.

Burping helps in release of the gases which the baby accidentally intakes. Burping should be done immediately after feeding.
