When Birbal came, King Akbar looked at him and said, “Birbal, I want you to make me a beautiful painting. I want you to use your wide and intelligent imagination in it.” Birbal was puzzled. He said, “But Sir, I am not a painter I am just a minister. How will I do it? King Akbar was furious he told Birbal that if he does not produce a painting before him until next week he shall be hanged. Birbal was confused he had to do something. He had a good idea. Next week, Birbal entered the court with a frame in his hand. It was covered. Nobody could see it. King Akbar was delighted to see Birbal. All the other ministers in the court came running to see what clever Birbal had painted for the king. When Birbal opened the cover, the jealous ministers were very happy to see what was in it. They were very sure that today Birbal would be removed for sure. The painting had nothing more than an open sky and green grass. King Akbar was very angry. “What is this Birbal? Is this what I asked you to paint?”To this, clever Birbal replied, “Your majesty a cow is eating grass” Akbar stared at the painting and said, “Where is the cow and the grass? I cannot see them.” Birbal replied, “Huzoor, you asked me to use my imagination in the painting so I have used it. The cow ate the grass and went back to its shed” Akbar was assured that Birbal was truly extraordinary. He was clever in everything.
