Tips for Bonding with Baby

Bonding with the newborn is the most important for a loving parenthood. It gives a feeling of warmth, care and security to the newborn. For a parent, bonding may prevent postnatal depression and also help in nurturing the relationship. Bonding is the easiest way of showering love to the baby. Read on some tips for bonding with your newborn.

Bonding with your newborn essentially means developing an intense attachment with your baby. It is a feeling which makes you do almost anything to keep her protected from any kind of harm. It makes you love your baby unconditionally.

This feeling of bonding develops automatically and naturally for many new parents within the first few days if not the first few hours of birth of the baby. However for others it may take a little time for this bonding to happen.

Although the best way to bond with a newborn baby is to spend as much time as possible with her it may not be possible for all parents to do so. In case your newborn was separated from you immediately after birth due to medical reasons or if you have adopted a baby weeks or months after its birth do not worry.

Irrespective of separation it is indeed possible to develop a deep attachment with your child. If your remain patient and communicate with your baby naturally by providing her abundant signs of affection, over a period of time bonding will automatically happen. Simple everyday tasks like changing, burping and feeding, will go a long way for you to bond even without your realising it.

How to Develop Bond with the Newborn

Here are some of the methods which help in baby bonding.

A word of caution here- to help you bond with your baby you must be in good physical condition. An overtired parent is not what you should be. Parenting is not easy and is time consuming. You need to have abundant energy to handle a newborn. Hence it is important that you get good sleep and rest enough. Ask for help if required from your family members or friends to ensure that both of you are well rested.

  • Bathing the baby is one of the best ways to bond with your newborn.
  • Babies love to be touched, caressed, and held. This is as important as their need to sleep and eat.
  • Baby massage is an excellent way to connect with your newborn.
  • Carrying the baby around in a front carrier generates a feeling of warmth.
  • Feeding the baby irrespective of whether your baby is breast fed or bottle fed helps to bond.
  • Wherever possible try to make eye contact with your baby at close range.
  • Mirroring the noises, movements, or expressions of your baby is also an excellent way to communicate and bond with your newborn.
  • Singing to your baby regularly is another fun activity which will relax both of you. Babies love to be sung to. You can also read to your baby.

Dealing with Absence of Parent Child Attachment

One illness which can delay the entire process of baby bonding is postnatal depression. In case even after a few weeks of the birth of your baby you do not feel attached or comfortable with your baby than you did on the first day of her birth, it is a cause of concern. Postnatal depression causes women to actually feel detached, resentful or very anxious about the newborn child.

It is not uncommon for new mothers to experience postnatal depression. At times new dads also experience these symptoms. It is crucial to the health of both the parents as well the newborn for the baby bonding issues to be resolved as soon as possible. Hence immediately upon recognising symptoms of this depression it is important for you to consult your health care provider and seek help. You can also discuss about it with your pediatrician while taking your baby for her first medical check up. Talking to your friends and other new parents might also be of help in the process of bonding with your newborn.
