Tips for Earning Your Child's Trust

Bonding between parents and children must be strong for their overall development. At the same time it is necessary for parents to earn their trust. Read on to find some tips for earning your child’s trust.

Well to begin with, you already have your child’s trust when he or she is born; after all you are his or her parent. It is important to have a strong foundation of trust on which the relationship with your child is built. But as the time passes things change or at least you may feel that things have changed because of actions that you are responsible for.

You cannot let even a single crack develop in the foundation and if you see such cracks, you must fill them up before it all comes crumbling down. Here are a few tips to make that foundation rock solid, devoid of any crack.

Show Interest in Your Child’s Activities

Earning your child’s trust starts early when they are young. Every parent works hard to make ends meet but sometimes they may get so deeply absorbed in it that they unknowingly neglect their child.

Remember when your child was trying to tell you about the drawing he or she made in art class in which he or she got two stars and a smiley or the time when the teacher appreciated his or her hard work? Did you use phrases like, ‘not now’ or ‘am busy now’ or ‘later please’? Kids do not randomly stop sharing things with you. If you listen and participate in their life at the early stages, they will themselves trust you with life events later on down the road.

Be Honest

You want your child to be honest with you? Trust you with his or her deepest secrets? You need to be honest with him or her from get go. It is a two way street. Not only this, you must also appreciate honesty that will encourage him or her to be truthful at all times. It takes a lot of courage to speak the truth that may land one in trouble but your kid shared it with you anyway, why, because he or she trusts you to give proper guidance.

Act Wisely

You punish them when they make a mistake which is a right thing to do. It is important to teach them a lesson when they go wrong but it is also important to be on their side when you know they are not at fault. Do not blindly trust a third person complaining about your child and react instantly. Delve deeper into the matter, figure out for yourself whether your kid was at fault or not and then take the appropriate action.

Never Impose Decisions on Them

Many a times we come across parents who force their children to follow a particular career path. You need to stop doing this. You know what is best for your kid but you need to present him or her with reality in a subtler manner without putting yourself in the position of an authority. If you impose choices on him or her, it is unlikely that he or she will come to discuss career prospects with you because he or she would not trust your opinion.

Confide in Them

Do not shy away from displaying your emotions in front of your kid. Let him or her know that even adults go through troubles in their lives and that life is not a smooth sailing ship. Let your kid know that you trust him or her to keep this side of yours to himself or herself. Later, they will know they can too confide in you with all their troubles.

Believe Them

When you entrusted your child with a responsibility and he or she tells you that it is done. Believe them! Do not go around cross checking every small detail. If your kid lied, it would come to your knowledge sooner or later and then you can punish him/her accordingly but do not doubt your child from the beginning.

Trust as you can see is a treasure that is hard to keep in store. Your love, rationality, patience and objectivity act as cement that keeps that foundation together. Never let this cement dry unless it has seeped right down to the end of that small fissure, filling it completely.

What are the ways to earn a child’s trust? Why is it important for parents to earn their child’s trust? How can parents earn the trust of their children? Discuss here.
