10 Bad Parenting Habits That Hinder Child's Development

Some parenting habits or ways in which kids are raised can do more harm than good to kids. Therefore, such bad parenting habits should be avoided completely. Have a quick look at the bad parenting habits which can hinder the development of kids.

Parenting is the hardest job on this earth. It is a lifelong commitment. You will soon get used to the activities of raising your children with daily adventures. But some of these habits will not result in desired effect what you expect. Here, you will find 10 such counterproductive habits which you need to get rid of as soon as possible.

1. Not Setting Rules

Rules allow your children to be responsible of what they are doing. If you forget setting rules, your children will definitely lack discipline. They would be afraid of exploring on their own, or they may misbehave if anyone tries to draw the line later.

2. Not Being Flexible with the Rules

You should set simple rules according to the maturity of your children. You should judge their ability to meet the rules while you set them. You have to modify the limits as your kids grow up. Being rigid with the rules set during the last decade can lead to bad parenting; be flexible.

3. Not Following the Rules Yourself

You are the example your kids will look up to. At the first place, you have to follow the rules you set for your kids. Children tend to test how serious you are with the boundaries of the limits, where you have to show that you are pretty strict about the rules as you follow them yourself.

4. Being a Servant

Stop doing every other work for your kids. Involve your children in doing the daily chores – they feel responsible about these. Ask your kids to do small tasks such as placing utensils, folding washed clothes, arranging the table before meals, etc.

5. Freaking Out

Always screaming at your kids, yelling and threatening them every now and then – these bad habits can make you feel unapproachable for your kids. They may stay silent and rigid thinking you have just lost your control, and at one point of time, they would just start ignoring you.

6. Giving-In Consistently

You may say no to a certain thing, but your kids convince you by repeatedly asking that they want that thing. If you keep giving-in consistently, your kids lose your respect and keep arguing for disgraceful advantages. Giving-in may bring temporary peace, but it does long-term damage.

7. Doing So Much

You love your kids – that is obvious, but that certainly does not mean you have to bring all the happiness of the world at their feet. Money does not buy happiness. Stop doing homework and school projects on their behalf; teach them to fight their own battles.

8. Acting of Being a Friend

Being your child’s friend does not mean that you have to completely act like a kid to bond with him or her. You are a parent, you need to come down to your child’s level sometimes and understand his or her feelings and encourage him or her to talk openly – it is a very simple fact. There is no need to act like a friend or let your child treat you as his or her peer. If you try to act like a friend, you cannot play either role properly. Your children may call your their best friend, but it’s your parenting that they are referring to and you need to be a good parent before anything else.

When we say “Be your child’s friend” it means that as a parent you need to understand your child’s mentality and his or her needs properly. So you need to see yourself in your child’s shoes when the need arises and just acting like a friend is not required.

9. Comparing and Criticizing

Do not compare your children with other kids; do not do public shaming to your kids – all these can lead to severe repercussions. Shaming children is a very bad parenting strategy. Your children can get de-motivated and would lose the interest in doing things on their own.

10. Not Discussing

Spend quality time with your children and talk out their problems if they are facing any. Many kids undergo a bad childhood filled with bullies from their friends and go unheard. Do not let this happen to your kids, discuss with them.

Good parenting has lifelong effect on your children which becomes evident when they grow up. Bad parenting can lead to real gross results. Throw all your negative thoughts and replace them with positive talks and look forward for all the points discussed above to avoid being a bad parent. Happy parenting!
