Top 10 Things Parents Should Stop Doing

Most often parents concentrate and pay attention to things they should do for their children. However, it is equally important to find out things that you should stop doing in front of your kids no matter what age group they belong to. Read on to learn about the things parents should stop doing or should never do.

Parents must agree that what they do and the way they do affects the psychological development of their children. Just like there are certain things that parents must do to and for the wellbeing of their kids, there are some activities that are a big no-no in front of kids.

It is important to remember that childhood development not only depends on what parents should do, but also on what they should not do. Here is a list of 10 things parents should stop doing, now. You may find that you do not do some or all of these things you will agree that these things have negative impact on a child’s development.

10 Things Parents Should Stop Doing

Have a quick look at the top 10 things which parents to stop doing so that they can prevent the negative impact which these things can have on child’s development.

1. Asking Kids to Lie

When parents ask their children to lie for them, they forget that later these children will lie on their behalf also. After all, parents lead their kids by example. This shows double standard behaviour which is not just harmful for your kid’s development, but also dangerous for your healthy relationship.

2. Yelling at Others in Front of Kids

Yelling at others can really scar kids emotionally. They grow up to emotionally insecure adults and may struggle with depression, anxiety and behavioural issues right from 7th standard or so. Above all, children learn what they live.

3. Doing Office Work at Home

Leave your office work as soon as you leave office. If you bring that home you will not be able to spend time with your kids or solve their small and big problems which you are definitely going to regret when they grow up. Additionally, your child will feel neglected and may have long term emotional effects also.

4. Watching TV When Kids are Studying

Many parents ask their children to study in their room or even when they are studying in living room they start watching TV. This has a very bad impact on children no matter whether you are watching some interesting program or just news. Children get distracted very easily and you should not help them do so. Instead you should get involved in their studies so that they perform well in their exams.

5. Regularly Coming Late From Work

Many parents have to work late and many choose to do so. No matter what your situation is, if you are coming late from work regularly you are depriving your children the love and care they deserve. The children of parents coming late from work show more behavioural problems and they develop these very early in their life.

6. Saying Bad Things About Other Kids

When you say bad things about other kids in front of your children you teach them to criticise and this spreads negative energy around them. Also, you are hampering their emotional, social and intellectual development in the long run along with teaching them to criticize others.

7. Adult Talk in Front of Kids

Sex education is a must but it should be imparted in the right way and this process should be a gradual process and it should not be in form of adult talk. Depending on the age of the child, adult talk can have extremely adverse effects. Kids are magnetically drawn towards these things and since they will not understand exactly what the conversation is, they will interpret them in their own way which may lead them to wrong paths also.

8. Telling Lies in Front of Kids

Children learn everything by observing the people around them and since parents are their role models they imitate them in every aspect and activity. When parents tell lies in front of kids they can get the idea that lying makes things easier or they will get confused because you teach them to be honest but you do not follow that yourself. So, stop doing this immediately.

9. Smoking in Front of Kids

Most parents are aware that smoking in front of their kids is dangerous for their health, but very few are able to see the other negative effects that it leaves in the minds of their kids. Here are the health and developmental problems which smoking can cause.

Risk of Health Problems

  • Wheezing, coughing and breathlessness
  • Respiratory infections like bronchitis, pneumonia and many more
  • Middle ear diseases
  • Slower lung growth
  • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

Developmental Risks
  • More likely to take up the habit as early as a teenager
  • Children do not find smoking unhealthy

10.  Using Abusive Language

Since children are the most dependent members of society and they depend on their parents or caregivers, it is very important that you do not use abusive language in front of your kids or for them. This behaviour has deep impact on children’s behaviour because they lack emotional support either partially or completely.

Children Need
  • To feel love
  • To feel safe
  • To feel secure
  • To feel great and valued
  • To feel that they can be helpful
  • To feel they can succeed
  • To get opportunities to explore and try new things

Remember, as a parent you are the role model for your kids and what you do and the way you do affects their development. The above discussed points are destructive parenting habits that are also going to undermine your self-esteem and success along with leaving long term impact on your child. Stop doing any of the above things so that you give your child a better life.
