Top 10 Things Which Kids Hide from Parents

Kids of all ages hide something or the other from their parents. If parents are aware of the things which children usually hide they can take action to prevent children from doing that. Read on to know about the top 10 things which children may hide from parents.

As kids grow up, they tend to hide many things from their parents because of fear. Your child may think that he or she may hurt your feelings or may get negative replies from you for what he or she wants or you may give punishment thinking what he or she is doing is not right. To avoid such consequences, you kid may keep secrets from you at different ages. Here are the top 10 things which kids hide from parents.

1. Pending Homework

Doing homework is not always exciting for kids. Your kid may hide the homework he or she has, so that he or she can have some fun. Your child may only admit that he or she has homework the night before school reopens or after getting punishment from his or her teacher. To avoid such situations, you must thoroughly check your child’s notes when he or she comes back from school and it will hardly take any time of yours.

2. Scoring in Tests

Your kid may try to hide the tests. Your kid may not admit if he or she fails in the tests. Kids do not like to get scolding from their parents because of fewer marks obtained in tests. Kids go to the extent of even forging their parents’ signatures in the report card to hide the test results. You must ask for the report of tests from time to time and keep a check on your child’s performance. It is marked that kids do well in tests and exams if parents are involved in their studies.

3. Damaged Things

If your kid damages an item at your house, he or she almost always fail to admit it. Your kid does not want you to go mad for the small or even big damages he or she ends up doing to the furniture or any other thing at the house. Your kid wants you to cool down. He or she may end up telling you a sometime later or never.

4. Getting Bullied

Many kids cannot tell their parents if they are getting bullied. Your child may get threatened by bullying that may keep him or her silent. Your kid may even feel embarrassed or insulted to share stories of getting bullied with you. Therefore, you must never let the communication gap develop between you and your child so that he or she does not hide such things from you.

5. Secret Parties

When your kid reaches the teenage, he or she wants to attend parties and does not want you to stop him or her from partying. Your kid may have a group of friends whom you do not like much. So when you are away, your child wants to hang out with them and have great fun partying which he or she does not want you to know. Yelling at child or punishing him or her is not the solution. You must talk to your child about it calmly and make him or her understand that such things will not be fruitful. You must provide right guidance to your child instead of getting angry.

6. Smoking

Teenagers always hide smoking habits from parents. Your kid would hate to know the consequences of his or her action. He or she will possibly hide his or her cigarette packs and lighter from you safely to avoid any such consequences. If your child is well aware about the ill effects of smoking beforehand, he or she is less likely to imbibe such habit. At the same time you must be a good role model and encourage your child to make good friends.

7. Having Boyfriends or Girlfriends

Kids are afraid if their parents do not approve their boyfriends or girlfriends. So your kid may hide his or her relationship from you if he or she is dating someone – the only reason being you may create chaos in their relation. If you discuss such topics openly with your child he or she may not hesitate discussing his or her love life with you.

8. Bunking

Your kid may pretend to go to school or work, but may end up bunking and having fun with friends. He or she wants to hide these because he or she does not want to face the consequences after you will get to know. Getting involved in child’s studies is the best way to keep a tab on your child’s schooling.

9. Physical Intimacy

Although, these things happen very rarely most of the teenagers hide their first physical intimacy with their partners from their parents. You may get furious after knowing that your child has experienced pre-marital physical intimacy, so he or she does not want to tell you the same. If children are taught that physical relationships are not right at this age and what the consequences of having physical are, children are less likely to get into it. Talking to kids about their bodies gradually right from the early age is a must to prevent them from experiencing such things.

10. Drugs

Sometimes, kids can get exposed to illegal drugs. But your kid will never want you to know that as you may get very angry and the consequences can be horrible. So your kid may never admit to you. Inculcating good values, educating about ill effects of drugs, being a good role model and encouraging child to have good friends is important to prevent child from getting exposed to drugs.

Kids may end up hiding a lot of secrets like this, which can be hazardous for them in future. You, being a responsible parent, need to talk with your kid, at the same time, making him or her believe that his or her secrets will be with you so that you can make him or her understand the difference between right and wrong.

Kids are innocent and they lie out of fear. Therefore, parents must encourage kids to be open without putting pressure on them so that they do not keep any secrets from them.
