Parental Involvement and Academic Performance

parental involvemen in study

Researches show that parental involvement in children’s education has great impact on their academic achievements. This even continues in adolescence and adulthood. Read on to learn what exactly you can do to enhance your child’s educational achievements.

Researchers have shown that if parents take interest in academic achievements of their children and get involved in it, their children become higher achieving students not only in primary education, but also when pursuing higher education.

What is Parental Involvement?

Children have two educators in the beginning – their parents and their teachers of whom parents are the initial ones. It is not only till the age the child starts attending school, but even after that parents play a great role in educating their children. There is no fixed form of involvement of parents in children’s educational performance. Some parents think that education is the whole and sole responsibility of the child himself while some take active participation like doing projects together, taking care of all kinds of homework and even playing sports.

Benefits of Parental Involvement in Studies

Have a quick look at the advantages of parental involvement in their children’s achievements in school.

Benefits for Children –

  • Children automatically receive better grades and score well in examinations and tests.
  • Children achieve more no matter what their ethnic background, parental educational background or social status is.
  • Children complete their homework on time.
  • Positive attitude results in good behaviour in school and the number of suspension for disciplinary reasons is less.
  • They have better self esteem and show high hopes and motivation towards school, their studies and future.
  • They are more disciplined.
  • Most of these children do not need to be sent to remedial classes.
  • These children are less likely to drop out from school and even college.
  • With involvement of parents, the cultural gap at home and at school is bridged and accepted readily by children.

Long Term Benefits

The benefits are not just short term but long-lasting benefits are also seen in life and achievements of the children whose parents take interest in all of their activities. They have better mental as well as physical health and carry on their education to higher level. Since parents involve themselves in children’s academic, co curricular and other activities, they teach them to value education and they demonstrate the same behaviour when they become parents.

Better Behaviour

Parental involvement in school activities and performance of their children in school makes children take special care of their behaviour. They tend to behave well not only with teachers, but also with classmates and other staff of the school. Many believe that this is also because they know if anything goes wrong their parents will immediately come to know. Their parents will visit the school if any behavioural complaint is sent home.

Better Personality

When parents stay involved in their children’s overall performance in school, they unknowingly convey a message to them that their accomplishments matter not only for them, but also for their parents. This automatically helps the child have high self esteem and they start realizing what they are worth of. The parents in turn feel more confident in their parenting skills and this helps them take right and appropriate decisions.

Above all, this improves and strengthens bonding between the child and the parents. Where parents feel good interacting and taking interest in their children’s day to day activities in and outside home, children enjoy academic and other activities at school. The child’s acceptance of self-worth is positively affected. The continuous support and encouragement that children receive from their parents has positive impact on their overall learning and development.

What are the benefits of getting involved in child’s studies? In what way can parents help in developing the personality of their child? How can parents get involved in school activities? Discuss here.

Parent's who are not involved in child's studies are not good in studies so parents must pay attention to child's academic performance.
