The Joys of Childbirth

By - Dr. R. Shah

Before women went to the hospital to have their babies, birthing babies was accepted as a normal and natural part of life.  With the involvement of the hospital atmosphere, women began to view childbirth as frightening, mysterious and even dangerous.  In reality, childbirth is not dangerous - it can be compared to any of the physiological processes like sleeping, eating, etc.  Just as the body allows the baby within the body all through pregnancy naturally, childbirth also happens quite naturally.

Women who trust their body's ability to give birth are automatically guided by an inner strength.  In today's times, it is a challenge for the mother to develop confidence, to trust her intuition and to allow nature to perform effectively.

You must have heard about the nightmarish labour pains, but what about the intense joy and pleasure that you experience as the baby enters into this world!  Women who birth their babies being confident and relaxed at the same time, experience an inner strength that gives them the capacity to manage the labour pains.  Going through labour and birth, rather than adopting shortcuts, allows a woman to feel the interweaving of joy and pain, to put in her very best and then bask in the happiness radiating from that incredible achievement!

Childbirth is the most fantastic adventure a mother can have.  The major hurdles in this experience are fear of the unknown, loss of control and increased body tension during childbirth that will exaggerate the pain.  This "fear-tension-pain" circle has an influence on the labour contractions.  It inhibits the progress of labour and gives rise to a lot of discomfort.

Getting prepared for childbirth will give you the correct knowledge of what is going to happen during labour and also how to work effectively to advance labour.  Knowing how to cooperate with your body's natural processes will make things a lot easier.

Thus, by enrolling in childbirth classes (also called antenatal or Lamaze classes), you will be able to recognize the strength that has flowed through women since the beginning of time and you will be proud to share the same courage and determination.  You will bask in the serenity of participating in an event as old as life itself and as new as the love for your child.  Birthing a child is a precious gift, an experience you will cherish your entire life.

was this written by a man? because i can't believe you even put this up. birthing is still dangerous and very painful and is not a normal activity like sleeping or eating but is more tragic to ones body and changes it forever like puberty or death.

this is a negligent article. in these past times the author so fondly references, mortality during childbirth was high, as it remains to be in areas of the world that lack modern medical care. yes, childbirth is a natural and, sure, a beautiful thing, but to imply that it is no more dangerous than eating may influence people to engage in the very dangerous practice of home birthing. if there is a complication, you will be glad to be at a hospital. it is not necessary to be frightened of childbirth, but it is necessary to be prudent and rational about it.

isn't it funny that the negative comments about non-hospital birth all came from folks in the usa? as an immigrant, it just boggles my mind how indoctrinated many americans are that hospital is the best place to birth...too much tv and special interests selling fear, fear, fear. if giving birth in hospital is so great, how come our infant mortality rate is so bad, despite the fact that most americans go to hospital to deliver? oh, this crazy country! god made our bodies just right to give birt...without being poked, prodded, disturbed and thus stressed by strangers every few minutes.

i am in nigeria as my hubby works here i am 5 motnhs pregnant second baby going to give birth here again no doubt preganacy is not easy and when labour time cums we feel for a moment i dont want it any more but as soon as baby is our hands oh as if he has given us the whole world happiness in a moment motherhood to be felt only by our innerself.when my first baby was given in my hand i expressed it as if it a loaf of bread.all the very best to all the to be mothers.

i dont completely agree with what the article says. while child birth is a natural process and there is no need to fear it, there is a need for medical assisstance. in my grand mom's generation the infant mortality rates were amazingly high. both my grandmother's have lost atleast 1 baby. one of my friends recently delivered prematurely after going through a complicated labour. if she was not in a hospital, there was no way the baby would have survived. so, while i agree that pregnancy and child birth are natural processes and there is no need for us to fear labour, i think if we could get some help, without harming ourselves or the baby, than why ever not?

i cant comment on this now exactly as i'm expecting my first baby and i'm eight months pregnant. but seems that now i have a choice to make as to whether go for normal or cesarian. anyways good to read the article, indeed confidence boosting. while reading the same i was thinking about my mother with all the three of us born in a normal delivery.i think article is correct in saying that when the time comes we will surely have the courage to deliver baby thru natural procedure.

really its a good article. and i think it helps all the mothers.

i am expecting my first baby and am 8 months pregnant; prior to reading this article, i was very scared about normal delivery but after reading this article i could gather little courage for normal delivery.one thing is true, giving birth to a child is the biggest achievement of mankind but it is painful- no doubt about it.but i guess the joy of holding the child in the arms shreds away all the pain.

i liked this article very much..as it boosted up my confidence again.
