Getting Ready for Childbirth

Preparing beforehand for the rigours of labour and delivery can prove very helpful for a pregnant woman. Here are some tips for helping pregnant women get ready for childbirth.

The last two months before the due date are usually the most exciting yet most uncomfortable for the pregnant woman. Many experience distressing physical symptoms like low pressure, swelling of hands and feet, increased body temperature, massive amount of body pain etc. Most women are also anxious thinking about the health of their baby and about worrying whether they would be good and competent mothers.

The process of childbirth is also a fearful contemplation for many as pain is an undeniable factor during labour especially if it is natural delivery. Here are some tips which will help you prepare better for the physically daunting yet magical process of childbirth.

Take a Birth Class

Take a birth class which will prepare you for all the things you are going to face during the childbirth process. These classes are professionally administered and aim to educate a woman about all the aspects of child birth. It is likely that you will learn about managing your pain, improved techniques of breathing and ways of using medical equipment that is used during pregnancy. If going to these classes alone seem daunting to you then ask your partner or a pregnant friend to accompany you. This is the perfect opportunity to prepare you practically for childbirth.

Create a Comfortable Equation with Your Partner

It is likely that the associated physical and emotional changes you go through during pregnancy will have left your partner feeling confused and helpless. The pre birth months are a good way to discuss with your partner about the practical and psychological ways that he can help in making things better during labour and childbirth. It is important that your expectation levels are on the same page otherwise clashes could happen in the future and that is not healthy for any of you.

If possible make separate duty charts for both of you that will determine who will be doing what chores after childbirth. This will resolve any hidden tensions and clear the air for happy parenting in the future. You will also feel relieved and better equipped for childbirth.

Talk Away Your Concerns

For a woman talking and sharing feelings is often the best kind of therapy. During the pre childbirth phase you can relieve yourself of some of your emotional burdens by talking to your mother or other experienced mothers. It is better to be well prepared mentally and emotionally for events like leaking urine, reduced sex appeal and post partum depression. This is also a good opportunity for you to get good suggestions about everything from diaper brands to baby care products to maternity bras. Try not to get too involved in hypothetical labour terror stories though as this will only make you feel more nervous.

Baby Proofing the Home

Baby proofing your home is one of the most exciting projects that you and your partner can take on just before childbirth. Commercial Baby Proofing kits are available in the market and all you have to do is to follow the instructions. Have a lot of fun while setting up and decorating your baby’s nursery, buying the crib together and thinking of names. The joy you feel in these tasks will help draw your mind away from the stress you feel about childbirth. If you have other children then this is a good time to help them mentally prepare for the arrival of a new member in the family and prevent sibling rivalry squabbles in the future.

The pre childbirth phase is a very sensitive phase so you have to remain alert to changes like sudden fall in blood pressure, fainting spells or any other abnormality. Contact your physician immediately if you find yourself in this situation.

Why is it important for a pregnant woman to prepare for labour and delivery? How can a pregnant woman get ready for childbirth? What kind of precautions should be taken by pregnant women while getting ready for childbirth? Discuss here.
