Packing Your Maternity Bags

Packing Your Maternity Bags

Packing your maternity bags beforehand prepares you for an early delivery. Check out the necessary things you need to put in your maternity, hospital and baby bags for being prepared for labour and delivery.

It is undeniably mentally a pretty hectic phase when you are approaching the due date. As your delivery period gets near, you seem to get overwhelmed as to what all are required at the moment and often goof up while packing maternity bags. But, there is basically nothing to worry as it all takes place in a sequentially order. Your health is monitored and you are made aware of the possible state that you will find yourself in the next few days. All that it takes is to relax and set things in order with a cool and relaxed mind. With the countdown to begin here are a few pointers that will help you deal with the apparently chaotic state:

Preparation

The key essentially lies in the manner in which you prepare yourself, mentally. With all awareness and support by your side, all you need is to first chart out the things that will possibly be required by you during this period. There is always a possibility of an early labour as these things cannot be accurately predicted in every case. So you need to be prepared with your essentials, and more so, if you are expecting twins, where the chances of early labour are higher. It is advisable to keep two separate bags ready – one for the labour ward and the other for yourself and the baby post delivery.

What Should Be in Your Labour?

Here are the possible ingredients for your labour Bag:

  • A file containing all the documents, charts and reports of your pregnancy period.
  • A couple of cotton night dresses or pajamas, along with a dressing gown, socks and slippers.
  • Comfortable large panties or disposable underwear.
  • A pack of sanitary towels which are particularly required during maternity.
  • Hand towels and facial wipes.
  • Facial mist spray to keep you hydrated and fresh, it also acts as a stress buster.
  • Water bottles and permitted energy drinks and healthy munchies for yourself and your spouse.
  • A book that you would like to read and personal music player.

What Should Be in Your Hospital Bag?

Here is the checklist for the hospital bag for you.

  • A couple of cotton nightdresses with front opening, as you would need to breastfeed.
  • A good number of disposable large panties.
  • At least three to five packs of maternity sanitary towels.
  • Two pairs of maternity or nursing bras.
  • A hand towel and two bath towels.
  • A toiletry pouch containing small packs of comb, hair brush, soap, shampoo, shower gel, tooth brush, toothpaste and face cloth, moisturiser, talcum powder and a deo.
  • A bottle of witch hazel oil; you can pour a few drops on your sanitary pad to sooth the stitches post delivery.
  • Breast pads and nipple creams.
  • Notebook and a pen and not to forget the mobile phone and charger.
  • A loose comfy outfit and shoes that you would wear when you go home.

Contents of Your Baby Bag

Your baby bag must have the following things:

  • Five to six pairs of Jhablas and nappies.
  • A couple of Bibs.
  • A couple of sponges and soft baby towels.
  • A roll of cotton wool.
  • A large pack of disposable newborn nappies.
  • Nappy cream and scratch mitts.
  • A blanket for the baby and a cotton suit for the new born to wear while you take him home.

Finally, with all the things packed as per the checklist, it is important to keep in mind that you are going for a delivery and all you need is some bare essentials. Many women make the mistake of confusing the situation with a sort of medical vocational period and overburden their baggage with needless objects. Remember, you are carrying things that are absolutely necessary for the well being of your baby and yourself. Other things that are required for fancy use can be kept at home, as it will only be a matter of few days, after which you will be at home and use things as per your desire. Last but not the least, keep some cash handy at all times.

Which items should be packed in a maternity bag? What things are required by a new mother post delivery? Which things should be packed in a maternity bag for the newborn? Discuss here.
