Tamarind is a fruit that is commonly found in Africa and Asia. The fleshy tamarind pods are often used for medical purposes. There is a standard tangy and sour taste that is associated with tamarind which is actually a good antidote to nausea that occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy. Tamarind consumption can be recommended during pregnancy subject to certain conditions as described below.

Harmful Effects of Eating Tamarind during Pregnancy

Certain medication like aspirin negatively reacts with tamarind to produce elevated chance of miscarriage and enhanced chances of lung and heart issues during pregnancy. Bleeding complications for the mother and child can also be possible due to tamarind consumption.
The intake of tamarind can increase the absorption of ibuprofen in body and this interaction has negative side effects. Ibuprofen tamarind interaction may lead to lung and heart damage in the foetus and in certain cases can also delay the onset of labour.
Excessive consumption of tamarind can cause diarrhoea that can dehydrate the body and ultimately harm the pregnancy.
Too much tamarind will release too much Vitamin C in the body which can reduce the production of certain hormones like progesterone in the body. This can ultimately lead to self induced abortion. Some gynaecologists opine that excessive consumption of tamarind can lead to cell damage in the foetus.

Can I eat Tamarind during Pregnancy?

Most women develop a craving for tangy and sour tasting food items during the first trimester of their pregnancy. Tamarind is delicious and can be used as a tempering agent or a flavouring agent during pregnancy. There are certain ingredients in tamarind which can be extremely beneficial for a pregnant woman but in case of tamarind moderation is the deciding factor. Excessive consumption of tamarind will turn its advantages into side effects

Benefits of Eating Tamarind during Pregnancy

Tamarind is a very good source of Vitamin C and it helps in strengthening the immune system, boosting the respiratory system and improving the skin texture of expectant mothers.
Tamarind has certain properties which can allow it to function as a laxative. This fruit helps in relieving the effect of constipation that is a major issue during pregnancy. Tamarind can also act as a natural cure for bile related disorders.
There is a good store of antioxidants in this humble fruit and they prevent the rapid formation of free radical damage in the body
In case you have the problem of gestational diabetes, consumption of tamarind can help cure it.
In case you experience a sudden spurt in blood pressure (a common side effect in pregnant women) you will be able to control this with moderate consumption of tamarind. The potassium and iron in tamarind helps in regulating the blood pressure.

Is it Healthy to Eat Tamarind during Pregnancy?

Tamarind does have a lot of benefits that can easily earn it a place in the diet plan of most pregnant women. However, most of its benefits like acting as a laxative, being a good source of Vitamin C etc can turn into unpleasant side effects when consumed in large quantities. It is not at all advisable to randomly consume tamarind during pregnancy unless you have spoken to your nutritionist about a healthy permissible amount. The consumption ratio of tamarind can vary with the stage of pregnancy you are in right now.

Tamarind has a tendency to interfere with the functioning of certain medication like aspirin and Ibuprofen. Therefore you need to see your doctor about the safety of consuming tamarind and analyzing its potential interference with your medication.
If you take all the necessary precautions then it will be healthy and safe to eat Tamarind during pregnancy. But care must be taken that you do not consume it excessively and consult your doctor before including it in your diet.
