Contraceptive injections are one of the modern and convenient methods of contraception for men and women. However, contraceptive injections are not free from side effects. Read on to know about the side effects of contraceptive injections in women and its disadvantages to men.

The contraceptive injections are long term methods of contraception. They contain a hormone that helps any woman not conceive till she desires. These injections are for both, men and women. Though it seems a very easy and one of the best options, it is not free from side effects.

The main function of the hormones injected through these injections is to stop the sperms from reaching the egg in men and stopping the ovaries release one egg each month for women. These hormones also stop the egg to settle in the womb. The injection is given in the muscle and the hormone gets released from there slowly. The injection has to be taken at regular intervals.

Contraceptive injections do not save anyone from any kind of sexually transmitted disease. So, couple who are in a new relationship should avoid this and use condoms to be on the safe side. Secondly, contraceptive injections do not suit all. There are various reasons why these injections are not fit for all.

Who Should Avoid the Contraceptive Injection?

The contraceptive injections should be avoided in the following circumstances.

  • Those who do not want any change in their periods or had problems regarding menstrual cycle
  • Suffering from any kind of cancer in reproductive organs
  • Suffering from severe depression
  • Gone through a heart attack or stroke
  • Any kind of liver disease
  • Unexpected vaginal bleeding problem
  • Those looking forward to have a baby next year

Precautions for Contraceptive Injections

  • Consult a doctor before going for the decision
  • Get pregnancy tests done beforehand because the injection should not be given to a pregnant woman
  • You should be sure that you want long term contraception
  • The jab cannot be removed from the body and so you should be prepared to face any kind of side effect

Once you have decided to opt for the contraceptive injection, you should be particular in getting the jab injected regularly. This is very important because contraceptive injections can be less or not effective if you do not have the next one on time.

I give a thumbs down to contraceptive shots. They do not protect against venereal diseases. Side effects are many such as weight gain, irregular bleeding and nausea. The most serious side effect is loss of bone density. I think women should use this method with caution.

Though contraceptive injections have side effects but if used correctly, it is an effective method of birth control. This is safe, convenient and effective method for women. It has many health benefits also. A little care is needed while using this birth control.

One should be careful about using contraceptive injections. They have many serious side effects. The most important one being that the prolonged use results in loss of bone density. It should be avoided as a long term birth control method. I think some other methods of contraception would be more effective and safe.
