Dealing with Babies Waking-Up at Night

Dealing with Babies Waking-Up at Night

Baby waking at night for feed is a common concern for many new parents. However, there can be several reasons due to which babies wake at night. If you want to know some smart ways to avoid frequent wakening of infant at night, read on.

Do you find that your baby wakes up every hour or two for feed at night? Well, there is not much to worry because brief awakenings at nighttime is a normal thing and happens to many adults too. However, there are tips that can help you make your baby sleep well and at the same time give a good night sleep too. This becomes all the more important when the mother is working because she is not going to get any other time during the day to take rest and complete her sleep.

Tips to Avoid Frequent Wakening of Infants at Night

Here are some tips to avoid frequent wakening of your baby at night

Find about Sleep Association

The first and the main reason is sleep association. If your child takes up the habit of having your nipple or bottle’s in his mouth while sleeping, it is possible that he will wake up plenty of times at night looking for it. In fact, it is not necessary that he needs to be fed all the time, but the habit wakes him up. Experts are of the opinion that this is a negative sleep association and must be avoided. Even if you feel tired and sleepy, try to wake up and feed your child, put him to bed and then go to sleep yourself.

To simplify these things, you will have to get your nights disturbed for few days. If you are going to give birth to your baby, it is good to know these things now. You can start the practice from the very beginning. But even if your child is few months old, you get prepared to disrupt your night’s sleep so that you have peaceful nights in future.

Change the Sleeping Routine

Keep a routine and follow it every day. Try to wake up your baby early in the morning everyday and encourage him to go to bed on time at night. If your child wants to take a nap, make him sleep in a well lit area so that he takes small naps.

Feed your Child Properly

When you feed your child during daytime, select a quiet and peaceful place. If he is fed properly during the day, his most of the nutritional need will get fulfilled and he will be able to sleep properly at night.

When breastfeeding, let your baby finish the first breast feed. This helps in peaceful sleep. Make sure you nurse your baby in a dark room at night. Do not forget to take care of yourself and rest whenever you get time. Try to get a walk so that it freshen you up.

Avoid the Use of Pacifiers

Avoid giving your baby a pacifier. Even if he needs feeding, make him sleep after that in his bed or cradle.

Rectify the Sleep Problems at an Earliest

Sleep problems have to be rectified because this affects the health of the child also. No matter whether your baby has just arrived or he is few months old, it is never too late to start good habits. Children have no idea about when to sleep. They sleep when they feel sleepy. However, infants for the first two or three months sleep most of the time.

It is the duty of parents to help them get into a habit of healthy sleeping hours.

Help them understand when it is sleeping time and even if they refuse try to put them in bed, tell them story, sing lullabies and do whatever makes them feel sleepy. This will improve the overall health of the child and the mother too.

Don't give your baby the idea that nighttime is playtime. Dim the lights (or turn them completely off where you can), and keep bubbly conversations and sing-songs to a minimum (with the exception of soft lullabies, of course). And unless her diaper is especially dirty or sodden (or if she's prone to rashes), leave it on her until morning — even a diaper change can be too much activity.

I let my baby sleep with me. She sleeps with me and my husband in our bed. I know this does not sound right but she sleeps peacefully. Even if she wakes up at night, she soon goes back to sleep when she sees both of us around her. I think this is due to the comfort feeling.

Even after feeding my baby and making her feel cozy and warm, I am unable to make her sleep. Should i start rocking her in my arms till she sleeps? I didn't want to do this as she will get habituated

In the first few months, newborn babies wake up frequently at night. It causes a disturbance in the sleep pattern of parents. But I think this is a part of life.
