Treating Dyslexia in Children with Music

Music is a universal language. Learning through music is very easy. Dyslexic children suffer from learning disability. Music can help dyslexic children in understanding and learning. Music helps dyslexic children to concentrate on their auditory and motor timing skills in a coordinated manner. Association between music and dyslexia is now proved. To learn about how music can help dyslexic children, read on.

There are a lot of researches that have indicated that when music is incorporated in learning, the language skills of children suffering from dyslexia can get better in a major way. Music can also benefit children suffering from varied learning disabilities. There is a clear explanation on how this happens. Music helps the dyslexic kids to concentrate on their auditory and motor timing skills in a simultaneous manner. This helps them to understand and follow the rhythms of language.

Studies have indicated that when a dyslexic child is made to learn a musical instrument, his ability to process the varied sections of the spoken language is improved dramatically. Currently researchers are working on in determining the exact manner in which this relation can be used for the betterment of the dyslexic kids.

How Learning Disability Can be Treated with Music?

Amongst the various studies, we can make a particular note of Music and Mind and Music and Literacy, conducted by the Association for Music Education, 1999 to understand the manner in which this relation is explained. Once the various cases are viewed, it becomes clear that music can invariably bring about marked positive changes in the dyslexic child’s ability to learn and retain information, especially the ones derived from the spoken language.

There are also numerous studies that show how music can help to increase the test grades that are directly related to language skills.

This is why you can often observe the music therapists including learning disability as a condition that they can readily treat through music therapy. Nowadays, you will come across the Individual Educational Plan or IEP incorporated in the child’s normal curriculum in their preschools and schools. These programs are found to enhance the communication skills and also result in a noticeable improvement in the physical coordination of the dyslexic child. This is the very reason why the Learning Disability Association of America suggests parents and teachers to include music in the child’s regular routine in order to enhance their early learning abilities.

How Do You go About It?

Music is always known to be a great healer. When it is incorporated into everyday learning, you will find that the performance of your dyslexic kid will improve in school as his reading and writing skills also get enhanced. It has been found that the usage of popular children’s rhymes like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or “Mary Had a Little Lamb” can improve the learning of the basic math. These songs can also be used to improve the learning and retention of formulas in simple science equations, math and grammar rules that are so important for written and spoken language.

The Musical Method for Dyslexia

Here is how the musical method can be implied to treat dyslexic children.

  • The teachers usually break the words into syllables and teach the student to clap and tap for each syllable as they go about repeating them.
  • The grammar lessons like the ‘I before E, except after C’ can be made into a song and taught.
  • Spelling of words and history facts can be taught easily by incorporating the information into music.
  • Students can be made to listen to short songs and then asked to write down the lyrics. This will improve their listening skills.
  • Clapping and rhythm can be used to make sequencing and orders that are important in math classes and the learning of alphabets easier.
  • Music can be used to set the multiplication facts.

This is how music can play a vital role in bringing about development in learning skills of the child. This kind of musical treatment can bring about overall improvement in dyslexic child and help child to cope with dyslexia easily.
