Symptoms of Eczema in Children

Symptoms of Eczema in Children
Eczema is a condition where the skin becomes red and itchy. It can affect adults as well as small children and infants. Read the following article and learn about the symptoms of eczema in kids.
All parents want their kids to be healthy and happy. However, children including infants and toddlers do develop some health related problems. Here are a few symptoms of eczema in children.

What is eczema?

Intense and excessive skin irritation in kids could be a sign of eczema. This health condition causes children to scratch themselves aggressively. When you see redness in your child’s skin accompanied by constant itching, then you should show your child to a skin specialist.

What are the symptoms of eczema?

Very often, the symptoms differ from one child to another. A skin specialist is the best person to consult if you feel that your child may have this disease. Many infants have eczema up to five years of age. It is a common problem in infants, toddlers and some adults.
Along with itching, there are small boils filled with fluids appearing on the child’s skin which could be a sign. These rashes often ooze out blood or other liquids if scratched harshly. Dry and flaky skin which itches immensely could be a symptom. Hence, moms must prevent the child’s skin from becoming dry.

Which part of my child’s body will be affected?

Infant eczema appears on the face and scalp however it can spread to other parts of the body. Once the child becomes one or two years old, the itch can start behind elbows, knees, etc. Scratching can cause scarring and darkness. Eczema is quite a common problem in infants fortunately it does become less severe with age. At least 20% of infants have this problem since birth and more children develop it after crossing infancy.

How can I help my child?

If the doctor diagnoses eczema in your child, then you can care for him or her in the following ways:

Bathing

While bathing your child, ensure that the water is not too hot. Hot water can take away moisture from your child’s skin making it drier. Use a mild soap which is not too harsh or a chemical free organic soap. Dry your child properly with a towel once he or she is out of the bath. Do not rub your child very hard. Just pat him or her dry gently.

Moisturizing

Apply some simple moisturizer on your child’s skin so that it remains soft and smooth. Coconut oil is also a great moisturizer which can be applied in various parts of the body. Moisturize your child’s skin immediately after bath or wait for a few minutes. Any cream, lotion or medicine which can retain the moisture is sufficient. However, consult your doctor before using any of these products on your child’s skin.

How do children develop this disease?

If there are some allergens in the child’s diet or the breast-feeding mother’s diet, then the child can develop this problem. Genetic factors also cause eczema. Apart from that, pollen and dust, cigarette smoke etc can trigger the itch. Avoid having a pet in your house because the fur from dogs and cats can aggravate the problem.
Change in temperature can cause eczema and even the irritants from chemicals in soaps. Hence, always use a proper soap without too much fragrance.

What precautions should be taken?

• Dress up your child in soft clothes like cotton rather than materials like wool. Use bed-sheets which are soft and comfortable.
