Vegetarian Diet During Pregnancy

  • As your obstetrician is most familiar with your medical record, consult him/her about the ideal diet.
  • It is very important that you get plenty of exercise.
  • A vegetarian diet is preferable comprising plenty of fruits and salads.
  • Vitamin E and fish oil capsules (the latter can be optional for vegetarians if they have a problem) are also important for the fetus growing inside.
  • Have protein in the form of lentils that (you should soak overnight) and have at least 2 cups of milk and yogurt.
  • Minimum oil in your diet is advisable. Avoid excessive butter and cheese as it builds on the total calories, which have to be kept in check.
  • It is very important that your blood sugar level should be under control and that you should be watching your blood glucose level with a gluconometer, which you should be having at home. Do this 2-3 times daily and if it is in control then you should have a good normal baby and also the baby should not be overweight.
  • It is advisable to have an ultrasound done in the 28th and 34th week to make sure that the baby is not overgrowing, which happens in diabetes.
  • As your pregnancy progresses, your blood sugar may get out of control and you may require admission in a hospital. So it's really up to you to take a good and correct diet that keeps your sugar count in control.
  • Vegetarian intake should consist of chappatis and plenty of vegetables. Avoid bread, have salads twice a day and 4-5 fruits a day.
