Seventh Antenatal Visit And Diagnostic Tests

In the seventh antenatal visit, the bump is measured to ascertain the baby’s growth. Find out how to maintain a healthy schedule and the blood tests required in the seventh antenatal visit.

What Can you Expect in Your Seventh Antenatal Visit?

So far you have mostly experienced a flurry of movements from the baby growing inside you. In your seventh month you will mostly find that the movements have slowed down quite a bit, which is natural. This happens because, the room for the baby is gradually closing in as the baby is growing. So as the area is becoming crowded in the uterus, the movements have also become somewhat lesser. In most cases, by this time, the baby turns and stays in a head down position which also is responsible for the lesser movements. There is nothing to worry about this as the babies too seem to like it this way.

Baby’s Condition During the Seventh Month

To understand the baby’s condition at this stage, think of yourself immersed in a swimming pool.

What do you hear when you are deep down in a swimming pool, you are partially cut off from the outside, but not wholly. The case is the same with the baby growing inside you as well. He is floating in the amniotic fluid and with each passing day, he is more and more able to become aware and react to the outside world, in terms of light and sound. Inside the uterus, the baby is able to sense light and darkness. This way you can control and adjust the waking and sleeping patterns of the foetus. The way in which you adjust the light and environment during your own sleep and wake cycles will be eventually adapted by the baby as well. So it is always advisable to maintain a healthy schedule.

The Baby Can Hear

Remember, the uterus is not a soundproof environment. So the baby can hear the entire array of sounds that is happening inside your body, like your heart beat, the swishing sound of your lungs and matters going down and travelling here and there in your digestive system. The baby can hear not only your voice and the others talking nearby but also the sounds that are happening in your environment.

The Physiological Development

In the tests of your seventh antenatal visit, you will find a lot of development in your baby. The eyes have already developed and they also keep them open now and then. And at this stage, lashes will also develop and a subcutaneous layer of fat will also develop underneath the skin of your baby. If the baby is a male, his testes will begin to descend. The baby is now around 35 cms, that is, 13.8 inches long and weighs about 1 kilograms or 2 pounds and 4 ounces. In cases where the doctors go in for an early delivery due to several possible complications in the mother, the baby has a very good rate of survival as most of his motor and organs are well developed.

Effects on the Expecting Mother

During your seventh antenatal visit you will discover that you are becoming easily tired even with the everyday tasks. This is natural and doctors advise frequent rests at this stage. There are visible signs of swelling in the ankles, feet and face due to enhanced water retention. Note that you are not wearing anything tight around your ankles and wrists and keep yourself well hydrated.

You should do mild stretching exercises with your doctor’s advice of course, and ensure that you are keeping a correct posture when you are sitting or standing. The bump is measured during a checkup to measure the baby’s growth from here on as the doctor prepares your body for birth. Drugs might also be suggested as injections if you happen to be Rhesus negative. Several blood tests are conducted to check the iron and other essential mineral levels.
