CAA - a socio-political turmoil for parents and their children

Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019. The Act creates a path towards Indian citizenship for“illegal immigrants” including undocumented Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian immigrants who have immigrated from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, and lived in India without documentation.Since the Act is exhaustive, it implies that it is not applicable for all other people. By doing so, the Act leaves out two important groups: (1) muslims from the countries mentioned in the act and (2) Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka, Rohingyas from Myanmar and Buddhist refugees from Tibet.Critics are describing the amendment Act as unconstitutional. The opposition parties think that the amendment act violates article 14 of the constitution , which claims to guarantee equality to all. In the middle of the current agitation surrounding the CAA, what might go unnoticed is the impact it leaves on children. Children get influenced very easily, so we can only imagine what children must be going through because of the protests against the act. A child wrote in his Christmas wish list to “stop this CAB”. Their innocence can make it very difficult for parents to handle all the questions they have about current affairs and their country.
Some parents believe its best to not talk about such “sensitive issues” in front of their children. But when children hear comments from their peers, it can put them at the risk of developing biased points of view, which is unhealthy. Children tend to believe their teachers and parents instantly. So, telling them that we will overcome this crisis as all religions are equal and we are a democratic country with a constitution would be a good way to start this talk with your children.

Problems that parents are facing due to CAA and the protests

1) Due to current and regular protests, there has been blockage of roads in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. This resulted in schools and colleges being shut or dispersed before usual time. This created panic among parents as all they wanted was for their children to return back home safely.
2) In some situations, parents were separated from their children as they were arrested for participating in peaceful protests.
3) As parents, they want their children to have the same and ideas and beliefs that they have grown up with, but the youth is extremely opinionated and it is impossible to impose your personals ideas onto them.
4) Answering the questions your children would have about current affairs and educating them could be a task for parents because some issues are too sensitive and not very easy to go in depth.

How to help your child in times of such political crisis

1) Talk to them about current affairs. Do not try to protect them from such situations, they will find out in some way or the other, so it is better if they learn it from their own parents. Tell them the precise information, hiding information or telling your children something that you don’t have enough knowledge about, could be an act of injustice.
2) You can not shelter your children from what is going on, so do not raise them in fear. If they believe they are ready to raise their voice and opinion against something, encourage them.
3) Build a sense of sensitivity within your children. Make sure they do not pick their friends based on religion and caste.
4) “Revolution starts at home”, so do not try to control your child’s opinions. There will be times when you and your children disagree on certain situations but you must find a way to make peace with it.
5) Children who grow up in families where disagreement and opinion clashes are welcome are most likely to be honest with their parents and cultivate a healthy relationship based on mutual respect.
6) Make sure your children inherit an idea of their country as an inclusive, diverse and beautiful one.
Teach your children the value of equality, inclusiveness and kindness. Raise them to be responsible towards their society, as they are the future of our country.
