Diet & Weight for Getting Pregnant

Right diet and weight aid in conception. If you are trying to get pregnant, you must be aware of the ideal diet and weight. Find more about the diet and weight for getting pregnant.

Are you planning to have a baby soon? Are you aware that there is a connection between fertility and food? Do you know that if you and your partner ensure to have a balanced, healthy diet much before trying for a baby, your chances of conceiving will be better? The purpose of this article is to share some basic information on healthy diet and weight getting pregnant.

What Does a Healthy Diet Comprise Of?

A healthy diet refers to eating foods rich in different types of nutrients required by our body. A typical healthy diet would include:

  1. Four to five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. Although best eaten in fresh, raw form you can benefit from nutrients contained in fruits and vegetables if consumed in frozen, canned or dried form. As far as possible it is best to consume organically grown food.
  2. Food rich in proteins like lean meat and poultry, fish, eggs and pulses, beans. Three portions of protein are normally recommended as part of daily intake for vegetarians.
  3. Low-fat dairy foods, which contain calcium like yoghurt or a glass of semi-skimmed milk.
  4. Food rich in iron like red meat, pulses, dry fruits, green vegetables and fortified breakfast cereals. To ensure that the body absorbs iron well including food rich in Vitamin C in your daily intake is very useful.
  5. A moderate amount of starchy foods, such as bread, pasta, cereals and rice. The recommended intake of this category of food is one serving with each meal.

Ideal Body Weight for Conceiving

Irrespective of whether you are trying to get pregnant or not you must try to maintain your body weight as close to the recommended weight based on your body mass index (BMI). In a healthy adult the BMI should be in the range of 18.5 to 25.

Both excess body weight and being underweight can impact the chances of conception or pregnancy. Ovulation gets seriously affected because of obesity in some women. Being overweight can also cause complications after you conceive. Since weight loss during pregnancy is not advisable it is best to shed excess body weight and be fit before you conceive.

It is important to bear in mind that you must not attempt to lose weight by enrolling in crash dieting courses. This will deplete the body's nutritional reserves all of a sudden. Hence by exercising and eating healthy you must lose weight gradually before you try for a baby.

Intake of Alcohol and Caffeine

When trying to have a baby it is best to abstain from having alcohol. Excessive consumption of alcohol can impact the chances of conception. Having alcohol post conception can harm the unborn baby.

Although not conclusively proven, certain research studies have indicated a possible link between high caffeine intake and problems in conceiving. It is important to bear in mind that caffeine is not contained in coffee alone. Tea, green tea, cola, chocolate, espressos like cappuccinos are all rich in caffeine. It is therefore best to restrict caffeine consumption when you are seriously trying for a baby.

Being healthy and fit will help you in conceiving without much difficulty. Balanced healthy diet and exercise are two important lifestyle habits which will ensure that you remain healthy both before and after pregnancy.
