Postpartum Dieting Mistakes

Postpartum Dieting Mistakes

Incorrect postpartum diet can be risky. Therefore, new moms should be careful about what they eat and should always consult doctor. Read on to find about the postpartum dieting mistakes.

It is a very wrong idea that you can go back to your earlier dietary routine as soon as you give birth to your baby. You cannot go on eating just like you had been before you carried the baby, neither can you cut off your diet in order to get back into shape. These are two most prominent dietary mistakes that new mothers do postpartum.

Postpartum Dietary Mistakes to be Avoided

It needs to be understood that a new mom is expected to feel fatigued pretty easily. Her body has gone through the rigours of childbirth and it is still in the healing process. And the new routine of taking care of the baby will naturally call for fatigue. So, one should not make a dieting mistake of either cutting down calories, or having food that contributes nothing nutrition-wise.

Accumulating Carbs that are Not Required

Do not make a mistake of piling on carbohydrates, just because you feel that you need energy. Remember, you need energy that is naturally available from the nutrition in the food. It is a big mistake to go for refined carbs like sugar coated junk and white breads. These food items will not fulfil your requirements and leave you feeling persistently deprived and hungry. They will simply spike up the blood sugar levels and you will end up feeling tired and exhausted.

Cutting Down on Calories Drastically

Remember, a human body cannot bounce back to its previous shape and weight overnight. Be patient and allow your body to get adjusted to the changes. Cutting down on calories is a biggest mistake that new moms tend to do postpartum. Although it is true that significant weight loss is possible with crash dieting, but it is also true that at the same time it does irreparable damage to the body. The body gets deprived of the necessary nutrients and it results in feelings of weakness and other associated problems that are related to weakness. It is harmful for both your well being and the newborn as well.

You also need to know how the body reacts when you are on a crash diet. Since your body is already stressed and exhausted due to the rigours of childbirth, it is natural that will need incentive to carry on. It needs energy and this comes from calories, but those should be obtained from foods that are beneficial for the body in terms of nutrient content. So, do not add stress to your body by cutting down on vital nutrients. Otherwise, your body will use your muscles to obtain the required energy and simultaneously store additional fat; which of course, will do nothing to help you in losing those extra pounds.

Avoid Dieting Experiments

In an attempt to lose the flab postpartum, new moms are prone to try out various diets that they happen to come across in lifestyle magazines or experiment on their own ideas. This too, is a serious dietary mistake. It is always advisable to seek the advice of an expert nutritionist when you are planning your postpartum diet. Remember, something that perhaps would have been a healthy option before having a baby may not prove to be the same now. Your body has changed and you must respect it.

  • So avoid raw sushis, or any uncooked food item.
  • Do not have anything that has high bacterial content
  • Avoid cold food as during postpartum, the digestive system gets pressurised.

The period of postpartum is a period of extra care and healthy eating. New mothers should be made aware of the importance of healthy diet so that they do not resort to dieting due to misunderstanding. Awareness about the common dieting mistakes will help in making healthy food choices. Healthy foods provide energy and also aid in losing weight gained during pregnancy. Also overeating of healthy food is a strict no-no during postpartum period. Simple, healthy meals can prevent many postpartum dieting mistakes.
