Newborn Hygiene Care Tips

Newborn hygiene care is very important part of newborn care. Maintaining hygienic conditions at home is a must when you have a newborn at home. At the same time you should be hygiene conscious while doing each and every thing for your newborn baby. Read on to find newborn hygiene care tips right here.

A newborn in the house means new challenges and responsibilities for the parents. Newborn hygiene care is something which must be paid attention to from the time of birth of your baby. Irrespective of whether you are first time parents or not, you must be prepared for a complete change in your way of living as soon as your baby arrives.

Your entire daily routine will undergo a sea change within the first few days of arrival of the baby. In-fact your routine will be constantly changing over weeks and months as your baby grows.

Transition from the mother’s warm body to the outside world is a big change for your baby. To begin with it is essential to keep the newborn warm, well covered and close to a human body. Breastfeeding is one of the most wonderful things which helps generate a feeling of warmth in the baby. In case you are breastfeeding your baby, remember to feed her every one and a half hours. Formula fed babies need to be fed less frequently- every 3 to 5 hours.

From a hygiene care point of view while bottle feeding the baby it is important to ensure that the bottle is washed and sterilised after every use. Hence it would be worthwhile to keep 3-4 feeding bottles of different sizes to ensure that you have at least two spare bottles washed and cleaned whenever required.

Diaper Changing

After feeding the baby you need to check every hour to see if she is wet. Changing diapers is another task which will take up a lot of your time initially. Till such time that you get familiar with your baby’s schedule you may have to do a lot of diaper changing. To prevent rashes and mushroom infections ensure to change the diaper often. You must also make sure that the diaper size is correct for your baby.

Initially it is advisable to bathe the baby twice a week. In the first few months of your baby’s life, it is not recommended to have a bath every day since it may cause skin dryness. However you must make use of a soft wash cloth to wash your new born everyday. Wash the hands, face, neck and the bottom at least once a day. Pay attention to the neck area to make sure that it is dry since sweat tends to accumulate there.

Fingernails and Toenails

Most first time parents are surprised to realise that baby’s nails can be long even at the time of the birth. Often babies tend to scratch themselves all over the face and body. It is therefore necessary to trim your newborn’s nail to prevent her from scratching herself.

To cut the nails without harming the baby you should just press the finger pad away from the nail and clip it gently with a baby nail clipper. First time parents may find it easier to clip the nails while the baby is sleeping since she will not moving while the nails are being cut.

These are few of the basic newborn hygiene care aspects which you must bear in mind. Most of the time you will automatically come to know when your baby needs a diaper change or a feed. This is because the baby is bound to cry when she is hungry or wet. On your part it is best if you keep a close check on the feeding time and diaper changing which are the two major tasks which will take up a lot of your time and energy. Make sure you are well rested to handle these activities. Ask for help from family or friends whenever required.

i only used cloth cotton nappies for my baby. he never had diaper rashes because cotton is very comfy for the skin and it also enables the skin to breathe. Once wet i used to change it which was impossible with disposable diapers.

i had kept an ayah for my newborn. she used to bathe him daily with lukewarm water but she never used soap, instead she used gram flour and milk cream. i guess this was the reason that he didn't have skin dryness.
