Male Contraception through Ultrasound

Male Contraception through Ultrasound

Ultrasound waves are employed in treating various injuries and in finding out any abnormalities in the body part, and now these will be used in male contraception. Male ultrasound is a permanent yet reversible method of contraception. This method is an ideal choice for today's busy generation. Let us know more about the working of this procedure, read on.

Studies have been carried out since a long time as there has always been a want for an effective and feasible male contraception option that is readily reversible. Male ultrasound can prove to be a highly effective birth control option whose effectiveness might be as long as six months. Research is currently on by scientists in the United States.

What is Male Contraception through Ultrasound?

This method of contraception for males is also a reversible method and the details of the procedure will be soon known. The best part of this method is that the moment the couple wishes to have a child, the man can reverse the procedure and help his partner to conceive. The researchers term the ultrasound method as a “Long term, reversible contraceptive.”

In this procedure therapeutic ultrasound instruments are used. The objective is to cause a complete depletion of testicular sperm in the man’s semen. The manufacturing of sperm in the testes is halted. Then the sperm reserve that is already there in the testes is eradicated in its entirety. When such a condition is attained, it becomes virtually impossible for the man to impregnate the woman.

The procedure basically draws its inspiration from the various therapeutic instruments that are generally and popularly prevalent in the physical therapy clinics as well as in the sports medicines. According to researchers this contraceptive option is primarily targeted at the population residing in the first world nations.

Benefits of the Ultrasound Method

The ultrasound procedure is believed to be a revolutionary male contraceptive option once the researches are successfully rounded up and is available in the public market.

  • Apart from being a very low cost option, this procedure is non hormonal too.
  • It just requires a single round of treatment thereby ideal for busy couples of those who are constantly on the move.
  • There are a host of technical and practical merits, some of which are stated above. The technology used in this procedure is extremely simple and the procedure takes only about ten minutes!
  • The dedication and the maintenance part are also very low compared to the other available alternatives in male contraception.

How does it happen?

  • Ultrasound contraception is done through the usage of ultrasound waves. They are extremely short and inaudible sound waves. They are administered in order to heat up the testes.
  • These waves are similar in variations and intensity to the ones commonly used by the physical therapies for the treatment of injuries.
  • The man is made to sit on a special chair and is required to dip his scrotum into a cup of water.
  • The ultrasound element is placed at the bottom of the cup. This heat up the water in the cup into a temperature that is similar to the one we use in our bathtubs.
  • There is also a hypothesis that this ultrasound results in an ion exchange between the fluid present in the seminiferous tubules and the testes. Eventually this reaction makes the environment in the testes unsuitable or hostile for the natural formation of sperm.
  • This is a painless procedure and some men even reported that the experience was gratifying.
  • This ultrasound procedure is performed for around five to ten minutes and usually two treatments are administered within a gap of forty-eight hours.
  • After about six months of infertility, the normal fertility in the man gradually returns to normal.

After these verified findings on ultrasound, the researchers are currently working on ascertaining whether this ultrasound contraception is reliable for a period of say five or ten years. Once the long term data is available, this contraception method can surely be considered to be one of the most innovative male contraceptive options.

Where is this procedure done in India? I think a proper planning is needed before opting for contraception through ultrasound as the fertility is restored only after about 6 months. So if you plan to have a baby, you have to think beforehand.
