Celebration of Raksha Bandhan

Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of Shravan, one of the months in Hindu calendar which falls sometime in August. It is one of the most widely and eagerly celebrated festivals in India and abroad by Hindus.

How is Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan Celebrated?

On the Raksha Bandhan day sisters tie holy thread which is called ‘Rakhi’ on the right wrist of their brothers and pray for their safety and progress as well as their long life. On the other hand brothers take the pledge of protecting their sisters from all kinds of dangers. Before tying the Rakhi, sisters put Tilak on their brothers’ forehead and a lamp is lighted to do traditional Aarti of brothers. After this tradition is carried out, brothers give gifts to their sisters. Sisters also receive gifts in form of cash on this special occasion.
Rakhis were ideally made of silk threads with gold and silver beads on it. However, nowadays the market is filled with varieties of Rakhis beautifully crafted embroidery sequins and some are studded with precious stones also.
