How to Avoid Raising a Lazy Kid

How to Avoid Raising a Lazy Kid

Laziness can create lot of hurdles for an individual to be successful in life. Therefore, for raising successful and competent kids it is necessary for parents to teach them to avoid being lazy. Here is how you can avoid raising lazy kids.
Laziness during childhood often translates into a lazy adulthood as well. Obviously a lazy temperament brings with it a multitude of problems like bad work ethics, fights over chore distribution, not taking up marital responsibilities and running a sloppy home.
Laziness can also make the kid fat or overweight or simply a slouch. Even if parents realize all this it is very difficult for them to exercise proper precautionary measures that can help them eradicate the germ of laziness from their kids. The guide below will be of help.

Resist Giving In

One of the primary reasons children feel encouraged to be lazy is that they know that their parents will do their work for them if they do not do it themselves. Most parents do end up doing their kid’s homework, projects, chores or assignments thus teaching their children that it is okay to shirk responsibilities.
Simply scolding or shouting at your kids will not be of help if you choose to give in later. As a parent it is advisable to be strong enough to make your kids finish their chores themselves or else let them face the consequences. Once this happens kids will quickly learn not to be lazy.

Talk about Responsibility

While it is natural to feel protective about your children and want to shield them; the inculcation of a sense of responsibility during childhood is extremely important. Talk to your kids about the disadvantages of being lazy and shirking from responsibilities. Explain that laziness during childhood will result in a lazy adulthood and poor performance in both professional and personal fronts.
Talk about the virtues of being responsible and explain how fulfilling one’s responsibility is integral in order to develop into a mature, well adjusted and competent member of the society. Once kids get used to hearing about responsibilities from you they will learn the art of being responsible themselves.

Note Down ChoresIt

It is better to clarify to your children that they are responsible for completing certain chores around the house as a sign of commitment towards the family and for the benefits that they are receiving. Even if your kids are very small it is always advisable to start early and give them tiny chores. You can make your five year old pick up stray trash around the house or wipe dishes after they have been washed.
Start off with very simple things like learning to pack their own schoolbags and clearing up their own mess. With older kids there should be specific chores with timelines and detailed consequences (if they are not done). You can also devise a reward system like a movie treat if all the chores are done on time is also a great idea. Once kids get used to the idea of doing chores soon they will not require much motivation or explanation to take care of their responsibilities.

Lead by Example

Kids learn best by example and in order to teach them not to be lazy you have to first try not to be lazy in front of your kids. Whenever you are confronted with a difficult situation like going for a jog vs. lazing in front of the television; choose the more responsible option. Explain to your kids the reasons behind your choosing this option and the possible future advantages that it offers.
The more you demonstrate that you are able to choose responsibility over self indulgence in difficult or stressful situations the quickly your kids will learn this art from you.
The art of not being lazy is not an easy one to learn but as a parent it is one of the greatest lessons you can ever teach your kids.

What leads to lazy behaviour in kids? How to motivate kids to avoid being lazy? How to inculcate a sense of responsibility in kids? Discuss here.
