5 Ways to Raise an Independent Child

Find important ways to raise children so that they grow-up into independent individuals in future and are capable of taking their own decisions.

Mahesh has noticed that his son does not keep his books and copies in place after arranging the routine. He has also noticed that his son does not clean up his room and his wife ends up cleaning the room for his son. Mahesh and his wife want to raise their son as an independent child. Both of them want to know how to maintain a balance while raising their son so that he does not misuse his freedom and at the same time does not become very dependent on his parents.

Helping the Child to Become Independent

Parents are always supportive to their children but parents must understand that there lies a fine line between doing everything for the children and being supportive parents. If parents keep on doing everything for their children the children will take it for granted and they will keep on expecting more from their parents. Most of the parents try to help their children by utilizing their own experiences of life which can ultimately make the child dependent on his or her parents. Find here some of the best tips to help a child to become an independent one.

1. Making List of Works

Not only children but adults may also miss out some of the work they are supposed to complete in a day. Making list of works to be completed within stipulated time is very helpful in keeping a track if you are missing any of them. Parents must teach their child to get into the habit of making list of the chores or homework or both that have to be accomplished. As and when the task gets completed, the work has to be struck of. This habit will help the child to become an independent person.

2. Prioritizing the Work

It is important that children learn to prioritize their work. This will not only help them to finish all the work assigned to them but they will also learn to arrange their chores according to its importance. e.g. if the child has to do homework, fold the laundry and water the garden then the child must know which work comes first in the list and start doing it accordingly.

3. Value of Money

A child must be taught the value of money since early days of childhood. Parents give pocket money to their children and the main idea behind it is that a child can learn how to spend the money properly. When a child learns to handle money properly he or she will also learn how to save money.

4. Having Faith

A child cannot become an independent person in just few days rather it is a process that has to be taught to the child. Parents have to keep patience while they try to inculcate different habits that will help their child to become independent. Children may not always be able to complete the work assigned to them. They are likely to make mistakes or they may complete it much after the time period assigned to them. If parents keep on doing the chores of their children themselves just to save time or just to make things perfect for their children, it may lower the self-esteem of the child. Children must not be discouraged rather parents must give them more opportunities to practice and keep on encouraging them.

5. Supervision of Work

Parents are supposed to watch how their children are doing their chores. If parents start doing things for their children, it will lower their confidence. Close supervision is needed but interfering and directing them at every step is a big “NO”.

The above 5 tips to raise an independent child would definitely help the parents in teaching some of those habits to their children which will transform them into independent and self-reliant individuals.
